Entrees include a sashimi platter featuring salmon, uni, maguro (tuna), mekajiki (swordfish) and hotategai (scallop), and silky smooth ikura (salmon roe) chawanmushi. Dig into its selection of chirashi don and udon for comforting yet elevated flavours. Savoureux pairs the elegance of fine dining with their take on French-Japanese cuisine which makes this restaurant a gem for halal food eaters.

It is wagyu haven at Wakuwaku Yakiniku, Singapore’s first halal yakiniku restaurant. Nestled along Bali Lane, this restaurant is easy to miss – if not for that sexy sizzling of meats and a smoky, savoury scent, which will lead you right to its array of charcoal grilled premium wagyu cuts.

Wakuwaku Yakiniku is brought to you by the same good people who set up FatPapa and at the helm in the kitchen is Japanese chef Tokiwa Hajime. The Japanese A5 wagyu (they’re halal!) cut is richly umami, marbled and decadent – a definite not-to-be-missed. Wakuwaku Yakiniku also has a seafood selection that includes oysters, tiger prawns, scallops and shishamo to cater to non-red meat eaters.

One of Saute-san’s distinctive ingredients is the meaty lion’s mane mushroom, adding a touch of umami to each dish it stars in. Vegan or not, the Saute-san experience truly delivers.

Dive into the distinctive flavours and culture of Hokkaido with Ichikokudo Ramen. The signature soup at Ichikokudo Ramen is prepared with fresh chicken, vegetables and a blend of ingredients from Hokkaido, including the all-important bonito, kelp and mackerel. The resulting soup is one that is rich and dense with umami flavours. The taste of Hokkaido does not end at just the broth; their ramen noodles are exclusively made with a special blend of Hokkaido wheat which adds a distinct springiness to each bite.

One of the most popular items is the Ichi-beef ramen: in a bowl of shoyu-based broth, there are sukiyaki-style beef slices, marinated egg, wood ear mushrooms, seasoned bamboo shoots, and chopped green onion. Rice lovers will adore the donburi available at this ramen joint, particularly the popular Japanese Garlic Karaage Don.

The word ‘shokudo’ often refers to small, casual restaurants or cafeterias that serve a variety of inexpensive Japanese dishes. At Tokyo Shokudo, they specialise in tempura and ramen with broths simmering for hours to extract the best flavours. While original ramen topped with your choice of protein like chashu chicken, duck and asari (Manila clams) are available, diners may choose the Yuzu ramen options for a slightly sweet and characteristically fragrant alternative. For anyone who enjoys a mash-up of cultures, the tom yum ramen selection beckons a try.

  • Pasir Ris

Edo Shokudo is a casual eatery in White Sands, Pasir Ris that features a menu of affordable Japanese fare. While it boasts of its teppanyaki concept, there are no chefs working on teppan grills and delighting diners with theatrical knife work here. Instead, diners choosing the teppanyaki options will get their food served piping hot on iron plates. Nonetheless, having teppanyaki selections is quite a novelty in the halal food scene and worth trying at least once.

Another unique menu item at Edo Shokudo is the Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a Japanese savoury pancake stacked (not mixed, unlike the Osaka-style okomiyaki) with layers of dough, shredded cabbage, bean sprout, fish powder, dried shrimp, tenkasu (tempura bits), meat, noodles, egg, all topped off with okonomiyaki sauce and dried seaweed. Other Japanese cuisine staples like ramen are also available.

Located at one end of the busy stretch of North Bridge Road is veteran brand The Ramen Stall. Expect to slurp on ramen with a local twist – like the ever-popular Volcano Ramen where dollops of a paste made with red chillies and dried Indian chilli padi are added for an explosive flavour. The Ramen Stall takes pride in its broth which is boiled for over 30 hours to get that signature milky smooth texture and deliciously rich flavour.

The Ramen Stall also offers dry ramen and chilled soba for those who prefer something without broth. Other than that, The Ramen Stall also offers Japanese favourites like sushi, tempura and grilled fish dishes like saba fish and unagi.

Now, Home of Sushi can be found under the same roof as sister brand Home of Seafood at Joo Chiat Place where they continue to sell great sushi made from the freshest seafood. From the humble ebi, tamago and kani sushi to soft shell crab handrolls, crunchy tempura maki to luxurious salmon hana maki, the variety of sushi here will satisfy everyone.
