Every Australian capital has its own namesake cultural festival, but Perth takes the crown with the country’s longest-running one. More than 70 years ago, this four-week summer extravaganza was born as a ‘festival for the people’, celebrating Perth’s vibrant culture and community on the shores of the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River). You don’t have to spend a cent to have a blast at Perth Festival, with free outdoor concerts, striking art exhibitions, inspiring talks and late-night dance parties. However, money will score you entry to world-class plays, movie screenings under the stars, dazzling dance showcases, world premiere concerts, plus panels and workshops during the annual Writers Weekend.

With music discovery at its core, 100 per cent of the Laneway line-up has released new music this year, and a third of the line-up will tour Australia for the very first time.

Beaker Street Festival, TAS

August 12-19, 2025

Three Hobartians walk into a bar. With Hobart boasting the largest proportion of scientists out of any Australian city, odds are at least one of them has a lab coat in their closet. That likelihood doubles if you’re in Tasmania during Beaker Street Festival – the nation’s top science and arts celebration held annually during National Science Week. Forget boring school science experiments or dull university lectures. Past festival highlights have included an Antarctic polar plunge and sauna experience, an innovative Future Foods dinner, and talks by Australia’s biggest scientists, including Dr Karl and Adam Spencer.

September – October, 2025

Toowoomba has a reputation for being the ‘Garden City’ – so a few smart noggins thought that segued nicely into a celebration of such. Fair to say the idea was a good one, given the town’s flower carnival has been going strong since 1949. Throughout the festival, Toowoomba turns into a sea of colour and a waft of perfume with thousands of flowers blooming across major displays in the Botanic Gardens, Queens Park and Laurel Bank Park. The carnival has a series of side events, including twilight sessions, a teddy bears’ picnic, a floral parade, and a dedicated festival of food and wine.

Set amidst the rolling vineyards of WA’s coastal wine region, Pair’d is a ‘wine first’ event that uncorked its inaugural year in 2024. The four-day festival showcases the South West’s world-class wines, paired with incredible culinary, music and cultural experiences. In 2024, vinophiles sipped wine in the sun at a long table lunch, sampled the region’s top wines at a Grand Tasting, and brushed shoulders with Michelin-star chefs in a world-first Wine Dinner Series.

Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, NSW + TAS

December 26, 2025 - January 2, 2026

This famous race kicks off on Boxing Day each year, filling the waters from New South Wales all the way down to Tasmania with luxurious sailing vessels. Don’t be fooled though, while the sport is fun to spectate from expensive mega boats in Sydney Harbour, it takes a whole lot of grit for the crews competing. It’s two to four days of hard work at sea, and the race doesn’t come without some capsizing – it’s considered one of the most challenging yacht races in the world.
