Students, students, students! The inner-city suburb of Ultimo is a bustling hive of academic activity on any given day of the week, and home to thousands of TAFE, UTS and Sydney University scholars rushing between classes and back home to study. Ultimo is primarily a residential neighbourhood but there are still plenty of gems hidden away on its leafy side streets.

Your Ultimo visit should always include a pop-in at the Powerhouse Museum, which often houses free exhibitions that appeal to kids and adults in equal measure; a pint or two at the Lord Wolseley, which is very much an old-school pub and all the better for it; and a coffee at any of the many teeny-tiny storefront cafés that dot its streets.
