A beautiful, shady walled garden is laid out in front of this 16th-century palazzo, which is filled with antiques, paintings and silver, and where the prevailing atmosphere is that of an aristocratic private home (which it is), restored and opened to guests. Service is charming but discreet.
A magnificent double stone staircase leads to the impressive bedrooms, all of which are beautifully appointed with richly coloured brocade-covered walls, some of which are truly vast. Beware, however: the three low-ceilinged doubles on the mezzanine floor are rather cramped. Bathrooms tend to be on the small side. In low season, prices at this lovely place fall into the affordable end of the ‘moderate’ category, especially if you book ahead.
