One of the most simple, elemental creations in the tome of classic cocktails, the old-fashioned is the whiskey lover's gateway to the world of drinking. That time-honored mix of whiskey, sugar cubes and Angostura bitters appears on menus and in recipe books around the world, with bartenders offering versions both traditional and gently-tweaked with either bourbon or rye, a lemon or orange peel, and an array of different bitters. Watch our video above to see Tom Macy, partner at Clover Club, demonstrate how to stir up his take on this classic drink.

Old-fashioned recipe:

Ingredients:
2 oz. rye whiskey
1 barspoon Demerara syrup
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
2 dashes orange bitters
1 small dash Jerry Thomas Decanter Bitters (optional)
lemon and orange peel

Instructions:
Stir with ice and serve in the rocks glass, preferably over a large cube
Garnish with the lemon and orange peel
