Despite his tuft of hair and castrato squeak, Michael Cera isn’t the title character of this low-key drug comedy – but he’s floating soon enough. Cera makes the role of Jamie, an American coke fiend abroad, strongly unlikeable. He might be on an endless holiday in Chile, but he’s taken along a toxic sense of entitlement. When he meets a swirling, hirsute hippie chick at a party, who calls herself Crystal Fairy (Gaby Hoffmann), his first instinct is to mock her.
Director Sebastián Silva does wonders with these two – the ice king and earth goddess. The slender plot takes them to a beach where they plan to boil a stolen cactus and get high on it. But redemption for the odd couple is just a trip away; even though Silva emphasises awkward moments, he loses nerve with some easy emotional breakthroughs. That must be some killer cactus.
