With Tokyo’s sheer number of vintage and consignment stores, second-hand shopping has become an essential part of the city’s retail scene. Tokyo is especially great if you’re on the hunt for designer labels as you’ll find a lot of luxury branded goods marked at decent prices and in pristine condition.

Whether you’re looking for a coveted Hermès handbag or some timeless Chanel jewellery, there are a number of stores that are worth a browse. If you need more convincing, many of these stores are even frequented by celebrities and fashion influencers (psst… Kim Kardashian and Blackpink’s Jennie), so you know these are truly shopping hotspots.

Vintage Qoo offers two floors of luxurious retail therapy. It may not be cheap, but this store has one of the best selections we’ve ever seen – you’ll find antique cabinets stocked with handbags and accessories from the likes of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Celine and Saint Laurent.

There are roughly 2,000 products for sale with a focus on clothing and accessories from the 1990s to the mid-2000s. Unlike other stores that rotate their merchandise seasonally, Qoo has items for all seasons to provide variety for customers travelling from around the globe.

As Chanel is one of the most coveted brands, the store has an entire corner of the store dedicated to the French fashion house, including plenty of clothing. There’s also a men’s corner with more masculine handbags and a rack of clothing including jackets and polo shirts.

Looking for watches? Head up to the second floor to find display cases full of beautiful timepieces from Rolex, Gucci and Chanel. The second floor also has a collection of rare handbags from Chanel and Hermès.

Vintage Qoo offers tax-free shopping for those visiting on holiday from overseas, so be sure to bring your passport along. We also recommend visiting before 2pm to avoid the most crowded times.

  • Daikanyama

When your store is drawing in even fickle fashion-industry experts, you know you must be doing something right. This Daikanyama boutique, hidden on a side street near Hachiman-dori, stocks a range of vintage items (mostly by Maison), including antiques, revamps, lingerie, shoes, out-of-print art books and vintage European posters.

It’s strictly womenswear, and carries some heavy-hitting labels such as Chanel, Hermès, YSL and Celine, as well as 1970s and ’80s retro wear. The interior of the boutique has a modern Parisian charm to it, and the store’s director Seiko Miyazaki switches the main display to a new theme every month to keep things fresh and exciting.

We appreciate the informative labels tagged on each and every piece, which tells you the decade your item comes from and if it’s antique, vintage or reconstructed. For something truly unique, don’t overlook the shop’s one-of-a-kind remake pieces. Made specifically for Eva, the collection includes fashionable blouses constructed from antique tablecloths to roomy handbags made from beautiful silk scarves.

The Tokyo outpost of this vintage store from Paris stocks big name labels such as Chanel, Hermès, Gucci, Celine, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Delvaux and Christian Dior. You’ll find mostly handbags and accessories on the first two floors, while the third floor has a range of clothing including pieces from its own house line, Janvier25.

Vintage items range from the 1950s to the early 2000s with classics like Chanel flap bags and Birkins alongside peculiar items such as a leather clad Hermès bicycle and a Gucci x Olivetti typewriter. Browsing the store almost feels like being in an art gallery as the unique pieces are interspersed with fun costume jewellery and items like designer letter openers and ashtrays.

If you can’t make it to the store, Vintage Paris Aoyama also has an online shop with international shipping.

If you’re in the market for a vintage designer handbag, you need to visit Hedy Daikanyama. This small boutique is just a block away from the massive Daikanyama T-Site bookstore and stocks a well-curated collection of pre-loved designer handbags and jewellery at decent prices. It also has a small selection of clothing and accessories such as watches.

It’s worth making multiple visits to Hedy as new items are brought in every two days. And don’t worry if you’re not in Tokyo because there’s a store in Osaka and another outpost in Fukuoka. Those outside Japan can also shop at Hedy through its long-running online store. Best of all, international shipping is free.

Looking to sell rather than shop? Hedy also has an online consignment service where you can send photos of your products for evaluation via the Line social media app.

  • Yoyogi-Hachiman

Hailing all the way from New York City, Brooklyn’s renowned second-hand clothing shop Front General Store has its very own Tokyo outpost in trendy Yoyogi-Uehara. The original NYC-based shop has some serious cred – it was selected as one of GQ's 25 best new stores in the world when it opened back in 2017.

Tokyo couldn’t be a better location for a second outpost as the capital is home to countless vintage and consignment stores. The Yoyogi-Uehara shop offers a selection of more than 500 vintage items from the 1940s to the 2000s, all sourced from the States.

You'll find men's and women's clothing, along with jewellery, socks, caps and other stylish accessories. Within the mix is also a good selection of designer goods including vintage Celine handbags to pre-loved Hermès silver jewellery.

If you can’t make it out to the shop, you can also browse the collection online.

Ragtag has been pretty busy since its first branch popped up on Harajuku’s Takeshita-dori in 1985: the chain now has multiple branches across Japan, all specialising in secondhand designer clothing for men and women. The brand has recently relocated its Harajuku location to a shiny new two-storey building on Cat Street (just down the street from its former location).

The ground floor is reserved for womenswear from the likes of Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Vivienne Westwood, JW Anderson, Sacai, Martin Margiela and even Chanel often make an appearance, while the second floor is dedicated to menswear with brands such as A Bathing Ape, Hysteric Glamour and Journal Standard to choose from.

If you’re looking to sell off some branded goods, the store offers a consignment service where you can hand over your old unwanted items for some shiny new yen.

This second-hand store is located along the busy Omotesando Avenue, but you might miss it if you’re not looking hard enough. Set on the third floor of a nondescript building, this Kindal store is one of the brand’s bigger locations. It stocks an impressive variety of pre-loved designer clothing and accessories for both men and women.

Shelves are stocked with plenty of handbags and accessories from the likes of Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Christian Dior and Balenciaga. However, this is really the place to come if you're looking for Japanese designer labels including Sacai, Comme des Garçons, Issey Miyake and more.

Looking to sell instead? You can do that, too, at Kindal Harajuku. Items are assessed right at the store and you'll get cash on the same day. Just don’t forget to bring some ID with you.
