Like most people, one of the things we miss the most about travelling is being inspired by the culture and art of various cities. We've loved getting to know and exploring the various independent galleries and prestigious museums in Singapore. And now that we can finally travel again, we can't wait to get acquainted with the cultural scenes in various other cities. Of course, there are Southeast Asian favourites like Yogyakarta and Kuala Lumpur. But for now, here are the best cities in VTL destinations for art lovers to travel to.

RECOMMENDED: The best museums to visit in Singapore

Barcelona

Gaudi's eclectic architecture is sprinkled around this coastal city, which has been long hailed as a European cultural capital. Head to the Eixample district, where you'll find some of the most breathtaking Modernist mansions such as Casa Battló, La Pedrera and Casa Ametller (by Puig i Cadafalch, a contemporary of Gaudí).

Take a walk around and you'll find public art on every corner, outdoor exhibitions brimming with life and contemporary art by world-renowned artists like Banksy and teamLab in the city's creative spaces.

Santa Fe

There's a diverse artist community in Santa Fe, with one in six residents estimated to be working in the art industry. After all, this city in New Mexico is universally seen as an important art market – and you'll find both contemporary art and Native American art coexisting.

Art enthusiasts will find an abundance of art spaces, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum, the Museum of International Folk Art, and the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art. On the weekends, there's an array of art markets and festivals to check out.

Bath

This city in the county of Somerset boasts gorgeous Georgian architecture, museums with extensive art collections and stunning nature. It's a museum-lover's dream vacation, with places like the Holburne Museum showcasing British masterpieces from the 18th and 19th centuries; Corsham Court; and Bath's Original Theatre Royal and Masonic Hall Museum, one of the best Masonic Museums in the UK.

Berlin

Berlin and art go well together like bangers and mash. During the city's transition period throughout the 1990s and 2000s, numerous artists around the world have flocked to Berlin to find gallery and performance spaces in unexpected places. Edgy and underground, the art scene here has an aura of personal freedom and rebellion. Is it any wonder it's become a ridiculously creative city?

Seoul

Like Singapore, Seoul is fast becoming a hub for Asian contemporary art. Over the past few years, various galleries and art fairs have set up base in the capital, with big names in the art scene stepping into the limelight such as Lee Ufan (the artist who founded the avant-garde group Mono-ha) and Yun Hyong-keun.
