We’re lazy creatures, even when it comes to our delivery meals. Which is why rice bowls are great – they travel well, come loaded with all the good stuff, and most importantly, make for easy eating as you kick back in front of your television. So on days when you’re feeling like you could use a treat, these places bring you a meal in a bowl at the push of a button.

The industrial-chic space of The Refinery is home to a designer workspace, speakeasy, and most importantly, a café that specialises in mod bowls of donburi. In particular, its gyudon ($14) comes topped with shimeiji mushrooms and a soft-boiled egg. Depending on your mood, you can also find grain bowls ($14) that come with mala beef, unagi, and fresh cubes of salmon. Throw in a cuppa or two for a hearty brunch – and be sure to try its Ba Da Ba Ra Ra ReNuggets ($6.90), which is The Refinery’s cheeky homage to the now-closed McDonald’s that comes complete with a curry mayo dip.

The young hawkers behind Big Bowls Project are bringing its affordable (under $10!) rice bowls from Amoy Street Food Centre straight to you. Its a popular healthy CBD lunch option, where a base of brown rice or baby spinach comes accompanied cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and a huge slab of salmon. Dress up your bowl with sauces of black pepper ($8.50) or tom yum ($8), but the crowd-favourite mentaiko ($9.50) is well worth the small splurge. Rich, spicy ebiko is slathered over the fish, then finishes with a blowtorch to lend a smoky note. Note that this Muslim-owned stall is only available for dinners on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

On days when you’re in the mood for a leisurely brunch, Wheeler’s Yard has you covered with plates of pastas, grilled meats, and finger food. But when you’re looking for a convenient meal option, zero in on the rice bowls instead. There are only four to choose from – but each is just as enjoyable. The vegetable version ($15.90) comes with tofu, sautéed mushrooms, braised daikon, and bak choy on a bed of Japanese rice while the Porky Bowl ($17.90) is made with a crispy jumble of bacon, eggs, onions, and yakiniku sauce. Beef bowl options include one topped with sliced oyster blade ($19.90) and a lavish version packed with slices of A3 wagyu beef ($45).

This casual eatery is an offshoot of chef Chen Kentaro’s one-Michelin-starred establishment, Shisen Hanten. Naturally, the star dish here is the mapo don ($13.80). Tender cubes of silken tofu are cooked together with minced meat in a thick, tongue-numbing gravy flavoured with fermented soybeans and toasted peppercorns. If the heat gets all too much, cool down with some Gong Cha bubble tea that’s also available on its online store.
