The best places for affordable steaks in Singapore

  • Jurong East

There are some restaurants that are worth travelling across the island for, and The Carving Board, nestled below a HDB block in the heart of Jurong East, is one of them. Opened in 2015 by couple Gary and Lynette, the establishment is best known for offering affordable Western fare executed with finesse. Priced at S$26 for a 250g slab of meat, it is no wonder the Australian Grain-fed Ribeye Steak is a hot favourite among diners. Grilled to medium-rare perfection, the meat is juicy and full of flavour. We enjoyed the meat on its own with just a pinch of salt, but for those who want more flavour, have it with the accompanying black pepper sauce.

  • Bukit Timah

A must-visit for meat lovers, this no-frills restaurant located along Bukit Timah Road, serves a great selection of hearty and deftly cooked steaks in a cosy setting. Whether you prefer a lean cut or one that is slightly more marbled, the menu is bound to have something for every taste bud, offering various options including Flat Iron, Ribeye, New York Strip and more – all flame-grilled to perfection. For the best value for money cut, we recommend the 250g New York Strip ($22), served with two generous portions of side dishes. Pickled celery and straight-cut fries make a great accompaniment to the steak.

  • Tanjong Pagar

Run by founder Sheen Jet Leong, The Feather Blade is a steakhouse best known for serving alternative cuts, particularly the feather blade which is a cut of meat from the shoulder blade. A highly underrated cut of meat, the feather blade is often compared to the tenderloin, as both have similar taste and texture. The difference? The feather blade is much cheaper. If you love lean cuts of meat, you’re bound to enjoy the 200g Feather Blade Steak ($24) served with smoked salt. When cooked to medium-rare, the meat is perfectly moist and tender. For those seeking more flavour, order a side of housemade sauce to go with your steak – the Sichuan peppercorn ($2.50) offers a deliciously spicy kick.

  • Burgers
  • Raffles Place

This establishment is famously known for serving up excellent burgers, but not many know that they also do a truly spectacular steak cooked over the same Binchotan-charcoal fired INKA grill that they use for their beef patties, lending incredible flavours and texture to the meat. There is only one steak option on the menu: Binchotan-Grilled Minute Steak ($22) – a decent 150g Argentinian Grain-Fed Angus Striploin, which they do impressively well. Enjoy it with a side of Chicken Fries ($7) or Cajun Fries ($7) – both cooked to crispy brown perfection.

  • Tanglin

An unpretentious steakhouse with a focus on difficult-to-access, lesser-known cuts of beef, FBG, formerly known as Fat Belly, serves up excellent quality steaks masterfully prepared over charcoal embers. Tucked away in a quiet corner in Serene Centre, this casual restaurant is helmed by Head Chef Spencer Lau, who adopts a minimalist approach when it comes to steak preparation, simply grilling them over charcoal flames, served with a side of grilled garlic bulb and sea salt flakes. Priced at $28, the Nippon Grain-Fed Angus – Flat Iron is a must-try for diners who are seeking quality and value-for-money steaks.
