If you’ve been following the Paris Olympics 2024, you’ll know that the eagerly anticipated international multi-sport event has come to a close. On July 26, Paris kicked off the games with a spectacular opening, hosting the Games for the third time – following its first in 1900 and then in 1924, with this year marking the latest chapter in its Olympic history. 

This year's event showcases over 10,000 athletes from 206 nations, competing in 32 sports – with break dancing making its Olympic debut. Among the competitors, 23 athletes from Singapore have stepped onto the world stage, competing in 11 different sports. 🥉 Sailing: Singaporean kite foiler Maximilian Maeder wins the bronze medal in the Olympics

On August 9, Maximillian Maeder from Singapore, who won gold at the Asian Games and was ranked #1 in the global standings as of July 1, finished third in the finals and secured the Olympic bronze medal. At 17, he becomes Singapore's youngest Olympic medallist.

The gold medal went to Valentin Bontus (Austria), and the silver was clinched by Toni Vodisek (Slovenia).

As of August 7, Maximillian was in second place in the overall standings, alongside him were Toni Vodisek (Slovenia) in first place with a net point of 12, and Riccardo Pianosi (Italy) in third with a net point of 20.

Badminton: Loh Kean Yew reaches the Olympic badminton quarter-finals, is the second Singaporean ever to do so

Loh is the second Singaporean to reach the Olympic badminton quarter-finals. He did so by defeating Li Shi Feng of the People’s Republic of China (23-21, 21-16) in the round of 16. Eventually, he was defeated by Viktor Axelsen from Denmark during the quarter-finals (9-21, 17-21).

Swimming: Gan Ching Hwee set two national records at the Paris Olympics in the Women’s 800m freestyle and 1500m freestyle

During the 1,500m freestyle competition, Gan achieved a time of 16:10.13, topping her heat and personal best that she had set last month at 16:10.61. And that’s not all – she also achieved the best performance ever recorded for Singapore. Overall, she finished in ninth place, narrowly missing a spot in the finals by just one position and 1.5 seconds behind the last swimmer to qualify.

Similarly, during Gan’s 800m freestyle competition, she topped her personal best and national record of 8:34.01 with a time of 8:32.37. In this round, she finished seventh in her heat, and came in 11th place out of 16 swimmers.

Athletics: Shanti Pereira progressed to Women’s 200m semi finals, but finishes last in repechage heat

Asian Games 200m gold medallist Shanti Perreira aka Singapore’s sprint queen earned her Paris spot with her national record of 22.57s at the World Athletics Championships. In the Paris Games 200m round 1, she came in 31st, with a time of 23.21s, which qualified her for the next round. However, in the repechage, she finished last with a record of 23.45s, missing out on her target of reaching the semi-finals.

Rowing: Singapore's first Olympic rower Saiyidah Aisyah Rafa’ee finishes second in her Semi-Final E/F 1 race

This is Singapore's first Olympic rower Saiyidah Aisyah Rafa’ee’s second Olympic game. On July 29, Saiyidah came in second in her Semi-Final E/F 1 race and advanced to Final E where she came in fourth. Her Paris campaign concluded with her finishing 28th out of 32 in the women’s single sculls.
