In 2012 Testaccio’s slightly dilapidated market moved into squeaky-clean new premises. Almost all the old vendors made the move and the eccentric selection of stalls selling shoes, clothes, household goods and fresh produce are all still in business. However an influx of new gastronomic stalls have created a delightful juxtaposition of old and new as well as breathing a new lease of life into the market. Michelin-starred chef Cristina Bowerman’s modern delicatessen Romeo (box 30/44), delicious Roman sandwiches at Mordi e Vai (box 15) and gourmet snacks and street food at FoodBox (box 66), along with many more, have all contributed to raising the modern profile of both the market and the Testaccio neighbourhood.
