Five quirky places in Leeds to take your children during the holidays

Five quirky places in Leeds to take your children during the holidays

Now we're a few weeks into the long, long school summer holidays, parents are under continuing pressure to find cheap and worthwhile entertainment to keep the kids happy. So far, we’ve had a whole lot of dreary drizzle in Leeds and it looks like we're in for some mixed conditions for the foreseeable future too. Still, come rain or shine there are still plenty of things to do, without having to resort to a soulless softplay centre. Here is a collection of our favourite, quirkier places that should keep you and your kids sane until September rolls around:   1. Rainbow Factory   Credit: honestmum.com     This enchanting hidden gem only recently opened – with the backing of Sir Branson, no less. The Rainbow Factory merges marionettes with performance, storytelling and arts and crafts. Harking back to nostalgic times where kids read books without electronic tablets, and would spend their days devising plays and crafting to their hearts content. It’s a much-needed creative haven for us all. With live shows and interactive drama workshops on all day, literature truly comes to life at this most magical of places. Unmissable. Rainbow Factory, Gate 3, Springfield Commercial Centre, Bagley Lane, Farsley, LS28 5LY.   2. Stockeld Park   A photo posted by Stockeld Park (@stockeldpark) on Apr 14, 2014 at 6:13am PDT   Famous for its summer (and Christmas) adventures, it’s impossible to be bored at Stockeld Park. The best independent bars for 30-somethings in Leeds

They say that thirty is the new twenty but when it comes to going out it's unlikely you'll still want to hang out in the same dive bars and sweat boxes that you did as student, getting smashed on £1 shots of miscellaneous spirits and waking up with a head full of regrets. Or maybe you do! We won't judge. Likewise, just because you've hit the big three-oh, it doesn't mean you suddenly want to start frequenting soulless chain bars either. Fortunately, our glorious city is awash with great independent bars geared towards the thirty-something market. Here’s our insider guide to the top bars in Leeds when you hit your dirty thirties…     Roland's <img id="f08d300d-75c4-3f70-0286-cb086e219009" data-caption="" data-credit="Roland's" data-width-class="100" type="image/jpeg" total="92824" loaded="92824" src="http://media.timeout.com/images/102782746/image.jpg" class="photo lazy inline"> Roland's   ‘Call Lane’ and ‘quiet drink’ aren't terms you'd naturally associate with one another, but new kid on the block Roland’s offers a cosy haven on this otherwise, er, hectic street. Cosy but in no way means boring, the bar has a vibrant atmosphere – especially on weekends – and this can be attributed to the friendly staff and decent clientele. The bar may be small, but it's well stocked with a fine selection of craft beers on tap and in bottle, as well as a short but perfectly formed cocktail menu (we recommend the espresso martinis). Head there during the day for one of
Parklife: the top five parks in Leeds

Parklife: the top five parks in Leeds

Isn't Leeds lush? Of course, you probably knew that anyway being a Loiner (or perhaps an honorary Loiner), but we really do have it all in this glorious city. Shopping fit for the most dedicated of fashionistas, amazing cultural institutions (hello Opera North, Northern Ballet and West Yorkshire Playhouse), top-notch world cuisine (never mind what Giles Coren says) and most importantly, during these treasured nearly-summer months, a whole host of spectacular parks on our doorstep in Yorkshire. In fact, Leeds has a pretty impressive 4,000 hectares of parks and green spaces in the city (who says its grim up north eh?). With a wealth of parks to choose from, here are some of the prettiest our city and the surroundings has to offer. Just don’t forget your picnic! The rudest street names in Leeds and Yorkshire

The rudest street names in Leeds and Yorkshire

No matter how sophisticated we like to think we are, there’s nothing like a rude joke or innuendo to turn us all into tittering teenagers again. Fortunately for us Loiners, all we have to do is wander the streets and we’re guaranteed a furtive laugh because the region is full of smutty place names. Living on these saucy streets is no laughing matter for home owners, though. Research suggests that having a rude address knocks an average of £84,000 off property values. So if you’re looking to get your foot on the property ladder with a bargain, a house on one of these rather rude roads might be the answer… Tickle Cock Bridge, CastlefordThe most infamous place name in the region is the rather fabulously named Tickle Cock Bridge, an underpass dating back to the 1800s. An attempt to rename the bridge Tittle Cott in 2008 was met by angry protests from residents who demanded the landmark’s name be reverted back to Tickle Cock. People power at its best.   Beaver Drive, DewsburyThe residential cul-de-sac Beaver Drive will either sound like a really cute street name or a down-right filthy one. You can guess which camp we fall into. Dick Lane, BradfordDick Lane is a long – not that size matters, of course – road on the eastern side of Bradford. The origins of the road name are unclear, but as well as its rude connotations, Dick can also mean detective, fellow, and, of course, Richard.    Cockburn Way, BeestonThis rather painful sounding street may technically be pronounced ‘coe-burn’

CBeebies' Dancing Beebies to get Leeds children moving

Excitingly, those lively, never-tired CBeebies presenters in your TV set – or as some of us parents call them, child care – are coming to Leeds for a special Dancing Beebies event on Saturday 28 March. After a special screening of CBeebies' Elves and the Shoemaker at Everyman Cinema at Trinity Leeds – a collaboration between CBeebies and Northern Ballet that hits screens over Easter – the Leeds-based ballet company, along with other local dance groups, will be performing throughout the day and running workshops for young children to join in. Kids will join a host of CBeebies faces for Dancing Beebies, a day of dance and creative activities inspired by their production of Elves and the Shoemaker and the BBC’s Year of Song and Dance 2015. Sessions include themed craft activities and story telling, too. It's all free, so just drop-in on the day from 10am.
What your mum really wants for Mother's Day

What your mum really wants for Mother's Day

It's that time of year again: Mother's Day (or Mothering Sunday for those aged 106), a special day driven by commercialism and capitalism (oh, the romance) to celebrate the mamas in your life. As much as we mothers collectively love those handmade cards our children carefully scribble for us (and we do, we really do) – even if the last one I received had some sort of octopus growing out of my head, which, granted, truly reflects the way my brain usually feels thanks to my sleep-depriving offspring – some quality time out will be top of most mother's lists.  Here are some unusual and downright relaxing plans you should book pronto to wish the matriarch in your life a happy Mother's Day… Hotel Chocolat's School of Chocolate Hotel Chocolat If only school had been like Hotel Chocolat's School of Chocolate, the world would be a happier place. If you love your mama, get her booked onto the endorphin-releasing, lip-licking Mother's Day Bean to Bar session with the masters of chocolate. Prosecco on arrival is followed by expert guidance and lots of tasting (yes!) to get you making and eating your own handmade chocolate. Dreamy.
