The best classical and opera concerts in NYC

The best classical and opera concerts in NYC

New York's classical circuit is—no joke—one of the most artistically diverse local scenes going. On a given weekend in town, you can check out grand European opera hits, edgy contemporary pieces, and one-off collaborations between electronic artists, indie darlings and recent conservatory grads. In addition to festivals like The New York Philharmonic Biennial, we have venues for every occasion, from the opulent Carnegie Hall to underground hot spot Le Poisson Rouge. And there are good deals to be had too, when you consider the free concerts, student-rush deals and the come-as-you-are ethos of several venues located downtown (and in Brooklyn). Here's where to find classical performances this week. RECOMMENDED: See our guide to concerts in NYC

The 50 best photos from the Governors Ball 2015

What was your favorite part of Governors Ball 2015? Pick from one of the following: the weather, the summer outfits, the friends (whether you came with a crew or found a new one there), drinking something delightful on the grassy expanses of Randall's Island, the people-watching (did you see everyone we said you'd definitely see at a New York music festival?), the food, the being-outside-and-not-at-work. Are we missing something? Ah, yeah, the music. That was pretty amazing too, we suppose (kidding). Anyway, there's only a few hundred more days until it all happens all again next year at GovBall 2016, so as you mentally prepare, relive the fest with this photographic evidence of everything, or almost everything, that went down. Get ready to do it all again in a few weeks, country-style, at FarmBorough. RECOMMENDED: Complete guide to Governors Ball 2015

The 10 best acts to see at FarmBorough Festival

New York has plenty of big summer music festivals—Governors Ball, Celebrate Brooklyn!, Central Park SummerStage—but it doesn’t have a lot of genre-specific ones, other than the hip-hop bonanza that is Hot 97's Summer Jam. Enter the FarmBorough Festival, which debuts this year and fills two niches simultaneously. Besides adding some much-needed depth to New York’s festival scene, FarmBorough acknowledges the growing importance of country, which is no longer just a regional concern. Below are the 10 artists you need to see at FarmBorough. RECOMMENDED: Complete guide to FarmBorough Festival

25 top fashion, art and music photos from Meadows Festival 2017

The second-annual Meadows Festival took over the area outside Citi Field this past weekend, bringing JAY-Z, Gorillaz, some mesmerizing air dancers (see below) and more. We've collected the highlights from Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as the best fashion at the Meadows Festival—so what else is there to say? We'll let these photographs, collected over the fest's three sunny days, speak for themselves. Now that the US Open has vacated and the Mets are...well, the less said about the Mets the better. The point is that the second-annual Meadows Festival took over Citi Field this weekend, building on the last year's edition with some key adjustments. The timing, for example. By moving the fest a few weeks earlier, this year's Meadows captured some prime summer-music-festival weather, with temperatures getting up to 80-degrees on Friday. As usual, the fashion choices didn't disappoint. Here's the best of what we saw. The ninth annual Electric Zoo music festival took place over Labor Day weekend, and, despite a bit of rain, its three-day lineup brought thousands of ready-to-dance revelers to Randalls Island. Folk didn't let the weather get in the way of busting out an array of colorful outfits for the fest. As usual, Electric Zoo's costumed masses were hard to miss. The five best things we saw at Afropunk Brooklyn on Sunday

The second and final day of Afropunk Brooklyn 2017 brought sunny skies, comfortable summer temperatures and plenty of worthwhile music, from the retro soul stylings of headliner Raphael Saadiq to the hardcore punk of Burn. Even against competition from MTV’s VMAs and some show called Game of Thrones, the fest drew plenty of people ready to dance away the remaining hours of the weekend to a closing DJ set by Kaytranada. Its two days proved just enough to fill the weekend and leave us looking forward to next year. Here are the five best things we saw. RECOMMENDED: Full guide to Afropunk Festival 2017 1. BROCKHAMPTON arrives Photograph: Nicole Fara Silver Los Angeles-based rapper Kevin Abstract took the stage to perform songs from his excellent 2016 project American Boyfriend. But he’s been nothing but busy of late: Since June, he’s released two mixtapes with his hip-hop boy band BROCKHAMPTON, which also has its own Viceland show. Accordingly, for the second half of his set, Abstract brought out the collective members to rap songs from their Saturation mixtapes, swarming the stage while chiming in their parts on songs like “Gold” and closer “Star,” the best and possibly only rap song to reference Agent Cody Banks, which they played twice.—Andrew Frisicano 2. Next to the stage, where most music festivals might post a logo or an advertisement, Afropunk Brooklyn lists these rules in large font: “No sexism. No racism. No ableism. No ageism. No homophobia. No fatphobia. No transphobia. No hatefulness.” How did the audience take those instructions? The merch table I saw had already sold out of a t-shirt featuring the phrases by midday (no word if there's more on order for day two). With four stages and more music than any one person could conceivably see, Afropunk Brooklyn's 12th edition filled Commodore Barry Park to the brim on day one. Here are the five best things we saw at the festival's first day. In May, she debuted the arrangements and movements for a small crowd at the Guggenheim. In July, she brought the songs to a big stage and dazzled at Panorama Festival. Now, in August, she played with Dave Chappelle at Radio City and headlined Afropunk's first night. Having seen three of those, I can say each performance has been near flawless, and each has gotten a bit looser and more comfortable. The minimalism of "Weary" and the full-band bounce of "F.U.B.U." stood out here, with a special bonus when Sampha joined to sing his parts on "Don't Touch My Hair." The announcements about

The second-annual Panorama Music Festival brought great headlining sets from Frank Ocean, Nine Inch Nails, Tame Impala and Solange. More important, it brought people together. A little tear comes to the corner of our eye when we think about the friends we made and the times we shared. Let's all do it again next year, okay? In the meantime, here's our highlights of how it all went down, one sunny weekend in July. The 9 best things we saw at Governors Ball 2017

A TV star singing spectacular soul music, the return of a moody pop-music mastermind and some great summer weather (despite the shaky forecast) were just some highlights of the seventh annual Governors Ball music festival. Taking over Randalls Island for three days, the fest delivered on its promise of showcasing big acts like Childish Gambino and Lorde with top of the line visual and audio support—and all the other things we've come to expect from a big-tent music festival, from corn dogs and sushirittos to fireworks, corporate activations and street art. Here are the best things we caught at the fest. Childish Gambino's magical Saturday night finale Photograph: Lauren Spinelli Governors Ball 2017 was filled with scheduling conflicts, perhaps the worst of which was the matchup of Childish Gambino and Phoenix on Saturday night. But for anyone who fell in love with the former's latest album, "Awaken My Love!," the choice was easy—and Donald Glover did not disappoint. Dressed in an all-white wardrobe and backdropped by the Funkadelic-inspired AML album art, he brought a funky, soulful magic to the stage that would be hard to imagine in an indoor venue. When his latest album dropped, many wondered whether or not Glover could actually hit the high notes in songs like "Redbone." To be sure, he can. He finished Saturday night's set with a stirring rendition of that very track, leaving the jaws of everyone in attendance on the ground. Before leaving the stage, Glover quipped, "I'l

7 great shows to see at new Williamsburg venue National Sawdust

This month, Williamsburg gets what promises to be a new beacon for contemporary composition, improvisation and the occasional puppet show in New York: National Sawdust. With composer Paola Prestini as the creative and executive director—and a host of curators including Baby’s All Right music director Billy Jones and vanguard composer David T. Little—there’s little doubt the nonprofit space is in good hands. The first month of programming holds great promise, with gigs by drone guitarist Stephen O’Malley and violin star Johnny Gandelsman on the same night, an intimate set from indie-pop duo Majical Cloudz and a series showcasing the work of hyperprolific saxist-composer John Zorn. As for space, the venue can accommodate 170 people seated or 350 standing, and includes two bars and a restaurant helmed by James Beard Award–winning chef Patrick Connolly. While the brick building’s exterior (and the name of the sawdust factory it once housed) remains, Brooklyn design studio Bureau V completely rebuilt its interior with an eye toward presenting both acoustic and electric music.
