Chann Bangkok Noi, a hotel with one of the most private addresses in Bangkok

Chann Bangkok Noi, a hotel with one of the most private addresses in Bangkok

One signature element of a traditional Thai house is chan, or the terrace that connects small rooms or buildings together into a cluster residential structure. This architectural element is partly the inspiration behind the name of a new boutique hotel—Chann Bangkok Noi, which is situated by the mouth of Bangkok Noi canal, right before it runs into the Chao Phraya River. “We call [the hotel] Chann because we’ve created four houses [that are] interconnected with this chan. “Chan,” however, could also imply the spot that connects, bonds the relations between family members,” explains Luchan Suewongprayoon, owner and restaurant manager. His family, who is behind many successful real estate developments in Khon Kaen and Bangkok, spent a long time looking for the perfect spot to build a riverside hotel. “We were looking everywhere—Charoenkrung, Charoen Nakhon—before we got here. When we first got here, there was almost nothing, only an abandoned structure. But once I climbed up to the second level of the structure, which is now the first floor, and got to see the view, I made the decision to build the hotel here,” the young owner relates. "Chan, however, could also imply the spot that connects, bonds the relations between family members."     There are many reasons to love Chann Bangkok Noi. Its location, for one, is special: right at the intersection of the Bangkok Noi canal and the Chao Phraya. Second, the hotel boasts unbeatable views: the peaceful riverside community on t

Breathe clean, fresh air at Bangkok’s Green Lung, Bang Krachao

Bangkok has its share of good parks where urbanites can relax and enjoy fresh air in a verdant green setting, but none of them compares to Bang Krachao. Located in the southern outskirts of Bangkok, the 16-square-kilometer man-made island is known as the “green lung” of the Thai capital with a shape resembling the organ. Its mangrove forests, ponds and natural environment provide a sanctuary for a variety of flora and fauna.  Over the last few years, the government has put a lot of effort into preserving the area and promoting it as an eco-tourism destination. Environmentally-friendly hotels and cafés have sprung up in Bang Krachao, and more outdoor activities are hosted on the island to attract visitors. Getting there is already an adventure. You have a few options, but we recommend taking the skytrain to BTS Udom Suk and then riding a tuk tuk or motorcycle to Wat Bang Na Nok before boarding a boat to Bang Krachao. This way, you see different parts of Bangkok and experience the various modes of transport available to the local residents. There’s a long list of things to do in Bang Krachao. Most people start by cycling around the island to get a better feel of what it offers and its natural attractions. If you don’t fancy working up a sweat, you can have a leisurely visit to the weekend market to shop for souvenirs and local delicacies, visit a museum, or play with farm animals.  Here are a few tips on how to best enjoy Bangkok’s green lung. RECOMMENDED: Fill up your lungs wi
Best restaurants in Phuket

Best restaurants in Phuket

Phuket has long been praised for its culinary culture, which highlights the province’s distinctive Phuketian Peranakan cuisine—mainly a blend of Thai, Malay and Chinese cooking—and is now being elevated by the influx of fine-dining restaurants. The city was put in the spotlight last year after it was recognized as a City of Gastronomy by UNESCO (the first time an Asian city was given this prestigious status). This year, Phuket’s culinary offerings come under scrutiny once again as the city becomes the new playground for Michelin inspectors testing its culinary offerings for the launch of The Michelin Guide Bangkok, Phuket, and Phang-nga 2019 happening in November this year. In celebration of Phuket’s shining moment, Time Out Bangkok travels to the resort town to check out its best restaurants and eateries.
Melia Koh Samui

Melia Koh Samui

What would your ideal five-star stay on Samui Island look like? If you’re envisioning huge, luxurious rooms leading to a beautiful beach where you can bask in the sun and listen to the peaceful sound of crashing waves, well, then Meliá Koh Samui could be right for you. This latest extension of the luxury Spanish hotel and resort chain opened in the northern part of Koh Samui just before the threat of coronavirus exploded. Unfortunately, due to nationwide regulations, the resort had to temporarily shut down almost as soon as it had opened. But now, the resort is ready as ever to greet guests back. The property—Meliá’s very first endeavor in Thailand—takes over the very location of the Imperial Boat House Beach Resort on Cheong Mon Beach and is a brief drive from Bangkok Airways-owned Samui International Airport, meaning you will be staying in one of the less hectic zones of this usually busy island oasis. Meliá features 159 rooms and 41 suites alongside a wide array of amenities, namely two restaurants, a YHI Spa, a kids club, an executive lounge, high-capacity conference rooms and ballrooms, a fitness center, two pools (one of which encircles the resort-like a small river) and a tiny water park. All these facilities help enhance your stay, and are complemented by friendly service from a supremely dedicated staff. If you want a stay with a complete “wow” factor, then you may want to book the Boat Suites, an iconic room type wherein Meliá converts old vessels that once plied th

Some kindly charge you a tiny bit more for your pet, while some are super generous for letting it to stay for free! So get up, get prepared, and go buy a fabulous costume for your pet now. 5 must-listen Thai artists who sing in English

5 must-listen Thai artists who sing in English

Some would say that Thai music sounds almost all the same. Most of the stuff being produced these days are pop-rock (and yes, hip-hop!) tunes with lyrics circling around the topic of love—or love lost. We can’t deny that alleged fact, but we can assertively say that there are quite a number of Thai artists who have parted ways from the mainstream, and are seeking new ways to generate something musically different for listeners. Phum Viphurit is one fine example. The prolific artist had his musical breakthrough in 2017 with his debut album Manchild, a collection of coming-of-age, guitar-driven indie tunes sung completely in English. The heartthrob later rose to international musical stardom in 2018 with “Loverboy”, a single from his follow-up EP Bangkok Balter Club. Phum’s music has proven that Thai artists have the capability to create songs that attract international crowds, which later paved the way for more musical talents in the country to emerge in the scene. So allow us to expand your musical horizons and introduce you to a few more Thai acts that have been releasing bangers and ballads sung in English. We don’t have to say it twice: you should definitely have a listen.

7 feel-good comedy shows that will make you want to subscribe to Apple TV+

In these stay-at-home times, Netflix and Disney+ have proven to be a worthwhile companion. These streaming services offer a huge catalog of content that allow for weekend-long binging. But at some point, the sheer number of shows on these platforms can get repetitive and you, more or less, run out of ideas on what to watch.  To expand your streaming horizons even more, why not try Apple TV+? Relatively a newbie in the streaming business, this Apple product is still building up hype in the red ocean of streaming services. Its collection is quite limited compared to other streaming giants, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing good to enjoy on it. From movies, to series, to documentaries, most of what’s been released on Apple TV+, so far, has been criminally underrated. This year, for example, the streaming service unveiled tear-jerking drama Palmer, which stars Justin Timberlake as an ex-convict who finds himself protecting a precocious boy from getting bullied. Its portfolio also includes an award-nominated documentary on Gen Z sensation Billie Eilish, and Oprah's interview show where she chats with A-list personalities like Lady Gaga and Prince Harry.  The platform is also a golden source for very good comedy shows, most of them underappreciated. A shame really, since each goes hard in providing quality entertainment, and keeps you invested with unique storylines, feel-good vibes and engaging characters.  Check out seven comedy shows on Apple TV+ that will have you consideri

8 podcast episodes about Thailand you should listen to

Your routine must be getting a bit boring, now that spending time in the outside world has been restricted and spending more time at home is recommended. You’ve probably done everything there is to do indoors. Watch movies: check! Redecorate your space: check! Even doing exercise: yup, check!  Why not try to while away time by, well, listening to a podcast or two? This 21st-century innovation can help you keep up with what’s going on in the world, and can be both educational and entertaining. From our research (and hours of listening to these), we’ve discovered that Thailand is one of the most talked-about subjects among podcasters. Many things about the kingdom, from its cuisine, to its tourist spots, to its livability, have provided golden material for these hosts to explore.  So tune in to an episode while you’re moving around the house doing some cleaning or even if you’re just lying on your bum on the sofa (no judgement here). It should keep you entertained for a good hour. Who knows, you might even discover something you’ve never heard about Thailand before!

10 (relatively) new Bangkok cafés you need to check out

It’s been quite some time since we indulged in one of our favorite pastimes: café-hopping. Restrictions have been eased on restaurant dining in Bangkok, and we’re celebrating by rounding up a list of (relatively) new cafés that you may have heard of but never actually got to visit.

Red Sky

Red Sky

3 out of 5 stars
When you tire from shopping at CentralWorld, take the elevator to the 55th floor and fill up your belly with imported premium meat and seafood. Of particular note are the king crab salad with shaved fennel, baby lettuce and salmon roe (B655) and wagyu beef tenderloin Rossini-style, a delectable foie gras-topped dish that’s served with truffle mushrooms, wild mushrooms and Madeira sauce (B2,155). The seafood on ice—salmon caviar, giant prawns, lobster, oysters, king crab, Carabineros, langoustines, mussels and a variety of dips (B5,555)—is impressive and worthy of big groups. If you’re considering dessert, the Manjari Chocolate Tartelette which comes with a generous dollop of pistachio ice-cream (B395) is an absolute delight. Red Sky also offers happy hour drinks to complement views of the rosy sunset (16:00  to 18:00). Choose from over 300 labels of wine or opt for signature cocktails like Until the Dawn (Absolut Elyx, Havana rum, Olmega Gold Tequila, lime, rosemary and pineapple juice) or Vanilla Sangria Energy (Absolut Vanilia, white sangria, chopped fruits and an energy drink). Lights are dimmed after sunset in the alfresco section to effect a breezy, romantic vibe. If you’d rather see what’s on your plate, reserve a table in the airconditioned indoor section or at the bar.
Vertigo and Moon Bar

Vertigo and Moon Bar

3 out of 5 stars
Breezy rooftop restaurant Vertigo and Moon Bar on the 61st floor of Banyan Tree Hotel features Art Deco furniture and flickering candles on each table. Knowledgeable waiters make recommendations from a recently revamped menu. Of particular note are pan-seared foie gras with brandy-caramelized apples, cherry reduction and toasted brioche (B580), fried squid legs served with larb spices and sriracha mayonnaise (B450), and jasmine tea-smoked lamb loin with garlic mash and lamb jus (B550). If you’re interested in an after-dinner treat, there’s the signature Caramello (caramel mousse, almond choux crumble, caramel popcorn and caramel ice cream, B280).

This minimal hotel in Sukhumvit offers great services at great price. There are two room types to choose from which are Plush and Extra Plush. However, for the Extra Plush comes with a bit of the extra TLC. The extra services include free shuttle bus, Malin + Goetz amenities, Samsung Galaxy and BTS pass during your stay.
Quince

Quince

5 out of 5 stars
If you consider yourself an avid foodie, then you’re probably familiar with the delectable fare at long-established eatery Quince. The restaurant, which first opened about a decade ago on Soi Sukhumvit 45, was one of the very first dining establishments in Bangkok to champion produce-driven international cuisine and wood-fire cooking. The restaurant moved to multi-concept space Siri House in Chidlom a few years ago and recently came under the reins of American chef Steve Doucakis (formerly at Jean-Georges and Isa Restaurant in New York, as well as Little Donkey and Bunker in Bangkok). The restaurant’s essence, however, has not changed—Quince still serves mouth-watering and aromatic dishes with a hint of char. As it marks its 10th anniversary this year (which also coincides with its inclusion on the list of Asia’s best restaurants), Quince will host a celebration that sees the launch of an updated menu. Leading the pack of highly recommended dishes are Salmon Nori Taco (B190/piece), which stuffs seaweed tortilla with fresh salmon seasoned with spicy sesame aioli; and Australian Lamb Sweetbreads (B340), a perfectly cooked appetite-invigorating dish. Though you have lighter, healthier fare such as Endive & Comte Salad (B360), Quince’s expertise really lies in big and meaty dishes like Aged Duck Breast (B760), Spiced Lamb Rump (B650) and Diamantina Wagyu Hanger Steak (B1,080). A smoky flavor is also added to Quince’s new sweet release Milk Ice Cream & Burnt Orange (B180), where s

Above Eleven

Above Eleven

3 out of 5 stars
Above Eleven dares you to go through a maze-like entrance to dine with the Bangkok cityline at your feet. The place offers bite-sized grub and hearty dinners to suit different degrees of hunger. Included in the lineup are Cebiche Above Eleven (seabass, prawns, deep fried calamari, sweet potatoes and red chili leche de tigre, B470), anticucho beef heart served with three Peruvian sauces (B250), Above Roll (six pieces of sushi with beef or salmon, cucumber and tobiko, B540) and Spider Roll (six pieces of sushi with crunchy soft shell crab and tobiko, B380). Don’t miss your chance to watch the sunset while enjoying happy hour offers (50 percent off on cocktails from 18:00 to 20:00). Try the Sunset in the Park (sake, vodka, watermelon liquor, lime and orange juice, B310) or go wild with the cheekily named Absinthe Ever Saw Pink Elephants Flying Through a Park? (B460). Dress smartly (dress code: semi-casual) to avoid disappointment at the door.
Baan Phraya

Baan Phraya

5 out of 5 stars
Let’s pretend we’re back in the 1920s, during the golden era of Siam, and have ourselves a good time over elegant Thai fare.  Situated in a heritage house near The Oriental Spa, Baan Phraya takes inspiration from the life story of the house’s former owner, Phraya Mahai Savanya, who assumed many high-ranking positions, including Minister of Commerce, during the reign of King Rama IX. During his time, the Phraya and his wife, Khunying Loearn Mahai Savanya—according to the research of Mandarin Oriental Bangkok—regularly hosted dinner parties for peers and colleagues that featured a spread of delectable dishes and traditional live music. The historical structure later became the Mandarin Oriental’s cooking school, until recently when it was converted into a new restaurant called Baan Phraya. Under the leadership of Chef Patchara “Pom” Pirapak, Baan Phraya revives age-old Thai recipes and redevelops them to create dishes with a modern flair. For its introductory offering, Baan Phraya has a multi-course tasting menu consisting of long-forgotten dishes inspired by Phraya Mahai Savanya’s memoirs and taken from old cookbooks, not to mention Chef Pom’s own grandmother. Before the meal starts, you will be escorted to the outdoor balcony where you can enjoy the fresh air, river views and a kombucha drink made with bael fruit and Mandarin Oriental’s own mulberry honey. Pineapple relish with peanut and tamarind is served along with the drink.  You are then ushered to the house and seated f
Blue Elephant

Blue Elephant

4 out of 5 stars
Nooror Somany Steppe is gifted. Originally a housewife in Belgium, Nooror used her cooking talent to put up the first Blue Elephant restaurant in Brussels with her husband over 30 years ago. Ironically, the restaurant in Bangkok is the 10th branch of the global brand—it was first launched in London, Paris and Dubai before finding a place back home. Nestled charmingly in the monumental Thai-Chine building right by the Surasak BTS station, the Bangkok branch is probably the brand’s most famous and has long been a prestigious spot for hosting members of the Thai royal family, foreign official guests and VIPs (a “wall of fame” is filled with countless of framed photographs of international who’s who). Don’t be surprised, then, if you end up dining alongside ministers from the Indian government, like we did. The converted dining room takes you back in time with colonial-style interiors, dark wooden furniture and antique sculptures. The menu sees high-quality local produce combined with imported staples like Australian lamb and French foie gras. But it’s chef Nooror’s meticulous treatment that brings these ingredients to another level. Blue Elephant’s signature foie gras dish (B780) is given complexity with a combination of tamarind sauce, mashed sweet potatoes and Thai basil. Other must-try dishes include crispy prawn cake paired with pomelo salad (B420), Phuket-style crab curry with betel leaves (B880), and fragrant sea bass wrapped in banana leaves and grilled in a bamboo case (
SO/ Bangkok

SO/ Bangkok

5 out of 5 stars
Gorgeous views and unique designs are the key reasons you’ll love SO Sofitel Bangkok. Located a few blocks away from Lumpini Park, the enclaves lush greenery can be spotted from most rooms. Room styles are crafted around four different themes: earth, water, wood and metal. The Earth rooms are embellished with playful, curvy walls inspired by prehistoric cave paintings found in Pha Taem National Park in Ubon Ratchathani. Metal rooms are decked out like an urban refuge with minimal, modern decor and pristine white furniture. The Wood room, on the other hand, is inspired by a traditional Northern Thai wooden house, while the Water room—the sexiest room of all—features concrete walls and semi-transparent glasses partitions.

Don Don Donki (MBK Center)

The fourth Bangkok branch of popular Japanese discount store chain Don Quijote (Donki for short) has taken up the spot once occupied by Japanese department store Tokyu in MBK Center. Like any other Donki outposts in the city, this branch displays a huge spread of Japanese goodies, from food to homeware.
Hotel Once

Hotel Once

Praised as one of the most romantic hotels in Bangkok, Hotel Once is popular for its photogenic minimalist black-and-white décor (we’re reminded of Chanintr Living). Perched on the top floor is Top Knot, a rooftop restaurant serving East-meets-West grub with stunning views of the Chao Phraya River.
Tichuca

Tichuca

As soon as we stepped onto the 46th floor of T-One Building on Soi Sukhumvit 40, we knew that this rooftop bar would be a hit—and we were right. Tichuca initially opened in December 2020 but, unfortunately, had to close down when the government imposed restrictions on bars and entertainment venues a few months later. With those restrictions now lifted, Tichuca has started welcoming guests craving an after-hours escapade after months spent in lockdown. The bar features tropical decor—greenery, bar and tables made of wood—which is nothing new for Bangkok. A massive “tree” composed of shining polychromatic LED lights, however, is what puts Tichuca in a different league. Looming over the bar, it can be set to bathe the entire place in one color or to light up the rooftop venue in luminescent pastels. Serving booze is still taboo, so on our visit we were treated to delicious mocktails based on Tichuca’s signature alcoholic drinks. Cosmo Mary (B240) is the hybrid adaptation of the Cosmopolitan and Bloody Mary, while Yuzu Colada (B260) is a new take on the piña colada, but flavored with the Japanese citrus fruit. Coco Spritzer (B260) blends coconut water and jackfruit for a sweet, low-key drink, and the coffee-infused Berries Cold Brew Tonic (B240) is perfect if you’d like a shot of caffeine. Food isn’t a priority for Tichuca right now but a few small bites are available for order.  Try to get a table during dusk so you can have both the brilliant colors of the sunset and the LED tr

First look: See an all-new look of Central Chidlom's massive bookstore

Bangkok's leading bookstore B2S is well known for being a massive source for both Thai and international books together with a big variety of lifestyle gadgets. A few years back, the popular bookstore started to develop a new bookshop concept, dubbed Think Space, which combines bookshelves, cafes, and co-working spaces under one roof, aiming at creating a friendly space for creative and leisure endeavors other than selling books. The first Think Space was introduced at Central Eastville, and it has received positive feedback that B2S has advanced the concept to several locations around the kingdom.  Earlier this week, the store has finally branched out to the heart of the city with B2S Think Space at Central Chidlom. Situated on the sixth floor of Central Group's flagship department store, the brand-new Think Space is aptly designed with mirror ceilings and the curvy contour that both visually expand the entire space. The bookshelf tunnel, however, is the show-stopping highlight for a highly creative snap for your Instagram.  Despite the different vibe of the Think Space, the new B2S branch at Central Chidlom still offers the same range of products from books, stationery, art & craft, lifestyle gadgets, to the kids' zone Play & Learn. The store opens daily from 10:00 to 21:00. B2S Thailand B2S Thailand B2S Thailand B2S Thailand
Ban Tad Thong is the world‘s 14th coolest street

Ban Tad Thong is the world‘s 14th coolest street

Time Out's latest list of the world's 30 coolest streets for 2024 is out—and Bangkok's Ban Tad Thong made the list at an impressive no.14! The list, as rated by Time Out editors and insiders around the world, ranked streets based on their dynamic vibes, and the presence of bustling eateries and lively small businesses. Melbourne's High Street in the suburb of Northcote claimed the top spot for the year, thanks to its perfect blend of old charms and new vibes. Hollywood Street in Hong Kong followed closely behind at no. 2, lauded for its rich history dating back to 1844 as well as repurposed art and creative hubs like Tai Kwun and PMQ. In Bangkok, where eating is a religion, no street is hotter than Ban Tad Thong, which stands no.14 on this year's list. Despite facing gentrification challenges, Ban Tad Thong has transformed from a network of neglected lanes selling autoparts to become a new street food haven. Lining up both sides are venues for wok-fried fare, hotpot eateries, and dessert joints. Acclaimed bar Find the Photobooth has just moved in and art venues are popping up all around. Plus, the street will be hosting its first Songkran celebration this April. Bad Tad Thong will certainly be buzzing in 2024.  Here are the top five streets on Time Out's list: High Street, Melbourne Hollywood Street, Hong Kong East Eleventh, Austin Guatemala Street, Buenos Aires Commercial Drive, Vancouver For the complete list, visit the website.

3 bartenders share their tips on how to drink responsibly on a night out

The cocktail revelry is in full swing this May. With so many exciting happenings, it’s easy to get lost in the merry-making and forget about drinking responsibly. But we know you don’t want to hear that from us. Instead, we’ll let the experts speak.
