Penha Longa now has a signature chocolate shop – and it’s open to everyone

Since Christmas Day, December 25th, the Penha Longa Resort – set within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park – has been home to a premium chocolate shop, open to anyone who wants to visit. The luxury hotel only officially announced the news at the end of March, but the chocolates have had their own dedicated space for a few months now. The Chocolate by Penha Longa is the hotel’s own brand, now celebrating its tenth anniversary. It all started with a small chocolate bar left in the rooms as a welcome gift for guests – a tradition that continues to this day. Since 2017, when master chocolatier Francisco Siopa joined the team, the brand has evolved with a variety of special collections, which until recently were sold at the hotel’s B Lounge bar. “That’s when the idea came up: why not start selling desserts and bonbons? And why not try something different like a chocolate king cake or our own twist on folar?” Francisco Siopa told Time Out Cascais. “So we bought a small display case and placed it in the bar.”   Rita Gazzo  The creative ideas came naturally over time. “If we’ve got a golf course at Penha Longa, why not make golf ball-shaped chocolates (€5)? And what about chocolate lipsticks (€4)? That idea actually came up one Easter for the kids – but it’s been a huge hit with adults too,” says Siopa. Over the years, the team nurtured the dream of having a dedicated space in the hotel for the brand, which kept building its story and chocolate collections. “It’s a bit like the Michel

Comprámos uma pequena vitrine que colocámos no bar”, conta Francisco Siopa à Time Out Cascais.

Bela Silva at Loja das Meias: "Clothing is like clay, it has the ability to transform"

The exhibition by ceramist Bela Silva opens this Wednesday, April 9th, at the windows of Loja das Meias, in the centre of Cascais. "As Janelas da Bela", curated by Carlos Pissarra, will be on display until April 23rd. Born in Lisbon and living between the Portuguese capital, Brussels (Belgium), and Paris (France), the artist has a solid international career and rarely exhibits in Portugal. "It was an unexpected invitation, Carlos had wanted to do something with me for a long time. He invited me, and I said yes, partly because it’s a store I’ve known since I was a child. It was part of my aunts" era, with all that tradition, and they have good taste, always discovering new creators,' says Bela Silva to Time Out Cascais during the setup of the small exhibition. The ceramist has a close connection with the world of fashion – her mother worked in the industry and designed clothing, so her interest in fabrics remained as a family inheritance. Rita Gazzo "Fashion transforms – we can change and look like different people depending on the clothes we put on. It’s like clay, we’re always creating new things. Clothes have that quality of transforming us," she says, referring to the plasticity of both contexts, "worlds that touch each other." Bela Silva was already preparing this series of ceramic pieces when she received the invitation from Carlos Pissarra. "From the pieces I was making, I chose the ones that made the most sense for this space, the ones that had a connection to fabric

Ring the green doorbell: Café de São Bento has arrived in Cascais

From the heart of Lisbon to the centre of Cascais. More than a year after preparations began, Café de São Bento finally opens in the town this Wednesday, April 9th, on the famous Rua Amarela. The menu — which features the house's signature steak as its main attraction — is "strictly identical" to the one at the original location, assures the owner of the restaurant group, Miguel Garcia, who purchased Café de São Bento in 2022 with plans for expansion. Cascais has always been one of the locations considered. In fact, while searching for spaces, Miguel Garcia discovered what would eventually become Bougain. Following his growing connection to the town, he was later invited to explore the restaurant by the Bay that would become the Italian Corleone. Now, the time has come for Café de São Bento — and the plans for expansion remain, with another restaurant in Lisbon and one in Porto already confirmed as goals by the owner. The traditional Café de São Bento steak, which has had the exact same recipe since its founding in 1982, remains the hallmark and soul of the restaurant — in fact, it was even named by Time Out as "the best steak in Lisbon". Perhaps it’s now "the best steak in Cascais". Made with sirloin, it costs €30 (200 grams) or €35 (250 grams). If you prefer rib-eye, it’s €27 (200 grams). Alternatively, they also serve grilled steaks or the Portuguese-style steak, with garlic, bay leaves, and cured ham. All comes with homemade fries. Rita GazzoO famoso bife The dish is in

The first images of the architectural project that will replace CascaisVilla have already been released

On the same day that the CascaisVilla shopping centre began to be demolished, the first two images of the project that will replace it were revealed. This is ATÓLL, a residential and commercial building designed by the renowned British architect Norman Foster, in collaboration with the Portuguese studio Fragmentos. One of the aims of this architectural project is to create a greener and more harmonious entrance to Cascais, with fewer cars and a building integrated into the surrounding environment. "ATÓLL is designed for those who value a connection to nature, meaningful relationships, and purposeful design — a project that combines sustainability, creativity, and well-being," said Filippo Buffa and Federico Rosales, the heads of the real estate company PRIME, the project’s developers, in a statement.   DR The apartments will have terraces that will benefit from sunlight, botanical gardens will be featured, and there will be "state-of-the-art technology." "Norman Foster's architectural vision and the dedication of the entire team will transform our region into a truly unique destination," says the Mayor of Cascais, Carlos Carreiras. "Located in the historic centre of Cascais, this project will enhance the beauty and prestige of the city, while also reinforcing our long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability." The two images released refer to the street, where trees and the traditional Portuguese pavement can be seen, as well as the ground-floor spaces of the bui

Marginal now has a maximum speed limit of 50 km/h

The Avenida Marginal, connecting Cascais to Lisbon, will soon have a maximum speed limit of 50 km/h along its entire length. To implement this new rule, new signage will be installed, with works expected to cause traffic disruptions between April 7th and 18th. The announcement was made on Friday, April 4th, by Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), which explained that the change aims to "increase safety for all users." The work will take place between 8.00 AM and 6.00 PM and will involve the "phased removal of the shoulder or lane," which is expected to cause normal traffic constraints. "We ask for your understanding regarding the inconveniences and disruptions caused by this situation, confident that we are contributing to improving the safety conditions of the infrastructure and, most importantly, for its users," added IP. The news comes just days after three cyclists were hit by a car on Avenida Marginal. Two of the victims were seriously injured and all were taken to hospital. + What’s new in Cascais

Underground Sports Bar: a new game bar in the heart of the village

In an increasingly touristy historic centre, a new spot has recently opened with the aim of being a community hub, first attracting local residents — both portuguese and foreign — and only later visitors. Welcome to Underground Sports Bar, a game bar that opened on February 14th in a space that once housed a strip club. The ground floor is small and unassuming, with the bar and a tiny outdoor terrace. But the Underground Sports Bar truly reveals itself when you head downstairs to the basement — a spacious area filled with snooker tables, arcade machines, darts, football, and tables where you can (and should) challenge friends to a board game. Rita GazzoA esplanada no exterior “I used to be a regular at the bars in the Cascais area, but the typical portuguese bar has disappeared. They've all turned into Irish or American Pubs, there was a gap for a Portuguese pub,” says the owner, Luís Salgado. “We want to start by winning over the Portuguese, and then move on to the tourists.” At 42, Luís already had experience in Cascais' nightlife scene. Together with his brother Ivo, immersed in the local rock and punk music scene, they began organising concerts at the old Lotus bar, which would later become Rock N Shots, and eventually evolve into the Stairway Club. Joanino: portuguese petiscos (with a few twists) to try in Carcavelos

From Berlin to Sassoeiros—that’s the journey chef Ivo Salgueiro took when he left the kitchen of a fine-dining restaurant in the german capital after several years to return to his home country. He was invited back by a friend, João Alves—one of the owners of the new Joanino (alongside his namesake business partner, João Capitão)—to take charge of the kitchen at this modern Portuguese restaurant, which puts a fresh spin on traditional petiscos while drawing inspiration from global flavours. Opened in December 2024, Joanino took over the very same space previously occupied by another culinary venture from the same team. Hoja Santa, which launched in August 2023, quickly became a go-to spot for lovers of authentic Mexican cuisine. However, the high cost of importing quality ingredients—essential to maintaining the restaurant’s standards—ultimately made the concept unsustainable. Rita Gazzo So, they opted for a petiscos restaurant—something more familiar to the Portuguese palate—especially given the location in a predominantly residential area on the border between Cascais and Oeiras. Before Hoja Santa, the space was home to the traditional Olh’ó Petisco. “The menu reflects a little bit of everywhere I’ve been, the trips I’ve taken, the things I’ve learned—but without straying too far from classic petiscos, to keep the risk in check,” explains Ivo Salgueiro. “Coming from Berlin, I know people here aren’t as naturally open to very different things. We want to stand out—and we d
