Turtle Bay opens in Leeds

Turtle Bay opens in Leeds

With new restaurants popping up in Leeds all the time, one of the latest and most exciting prospects is Turtle Bay, which has opened on the site of the old O'Neill's store in The Light. Offering a menu based on the power of the scotch bonnet chilli – with starters, mains and desserts all containing this feisty ingredient – it's clear what the distinguishing features are that help to set Turtle Bay apart from other restaurants in Leeds. In terms of bringing a specific cuisine to the masses, Turtle Bay builds on the same idea as Las Iguanas, which was set up originally by the same owner. With this in mind, there is a nice relaxed area in which to enjoy 2-4-1 cocktails as well as a spacious dining area. The drinks offer runs all day (except between 7pm and 10pm), so there certainly are savings to be made for those looking for a post-work drink.   As is the trend these days, you can watch on as your food is grilled in front of you. Alternatively, you could work your way through the cocktail menu, boasting drinks made with over 40 different types of rum. With the likes of dark, light and even the feared over-proof rums on offer, the bar team know their stuff and can help you go beyond your standard rum and coke option. Food-wise, the emphasis is on spicy dishes and jerk chicken. The jerk chicken brings with it a healthy dose of chilli, while the curried goat is all about aromatic flavours. This is a restaurant that does not attempt to stay true to the original recipes but instead

Guilt-free eating: foodies doing good in and around Leeds

Leeds and the surrounding area boast some of the finest food in the UK, with restaurants like The Man Behind The Curtain at the very cutting edge of culinary cuisine. However, you might not know that the foodies in Leeds are also firmly on the ball when it comes to working together to support worthy causes. Here's a brief guide to some of the best examples of this in and around the city: The Granary Restaurant, Crag House Farm Granary Restaurant   Just a five minute hop from Adel, Horsforth, and Cookridge, there's tasty food and a wonderful selection of local produce to be found at Crag House Farm in North Leeds. There's also a buzzing open kitchen, and the waiters are some of the friendliest you're likely to encounter in the city.  The caramel cake is to die for, the lemon drizzle oozing with sweet tones, and the bacon sarnie's a real winner – but the best thing about Crag House Farm is its focus on helping vulnerable people in society. Waiters donate tips to the schemes that run from the farm and there's an overall sense of feel-good that permeates this gem of a foodie haunt. Using only food that has been deemed unworthy of being sold (but is still very much edible), the City Junk-tion offers a great

Suburban eats: Chapel Allerton

Chapel Allerton is one of the best loved ‘burbs in Leeds. Packed with restaurants, bars and cafes, this is a foodie’s paradise. So, if you don’t know your Mustard Pot from your Crust and Crumb, take a look at our guide to where to grab some decent grub: The Mustard Pot   A photo posted by @themustardpot on Jul 16, 2015 at 8:25am PDT   The Mustard Pot occupies an enviable plot in the heart of Chapel Allerton. Famous for its Sunday night pub quiz and (in our humble opinion at least) its pork in cream sauce and sticky toffee pudding, this is the place to spend a few hours wrapped up warm inside on a cold evening, or basking in the Leeds sunshine in the summer in the vast beer garden.  The Mustard Pot offers monthly guest ales, which is a nice touch for those who like experimenting with their ale, and its wine list includes a couple of unexpected choices from around the world.  The Mustard Pot, 20 Stainbeck Ln, Leeds LS7 3QY Pinche Pinche   A photo posted by Ed Sowerby (@edsowerby) on Aug 14, 2015 at 12:55pm PDT   Leeds isn't exactly lacking in Mexican restaurants, but many only manage generic Mexican food done averagely.  Pinche Pinche bucks this trend. Offering tapas style Mexican dishes as well as slightly bigger options for those who don't like sharing, Pinche Pinche always has a buzzy atmosphere and fantastic boozy options for those in the mood for a drink.  Leave room for the churros with dark chocolate sauce. It's heaven on a plate.   Pinche Pinche, 116 Harrogate

Suburban eats: Horsforth, Cookridge and Adel

Last time we looked outside the city centre for great spots to eat, we went to Yeadon and Otley. Today we head to Adel, Cookridge and Horsforth. With beautiful green scenery, including the superb York Gate Gardens, the Adel, Cookridge and Horsforth suburbs are amongst of the most picturesque parts of Leeds. On top of that, these locations are ideal if you're partial to decent Italian food; these suburbs boast arguably the finest pizzas and pastas across the city. Here are a few foodie treasures you can enjoy: Trattoria Il Forno    A photo posted by E R I N R I V E R S (@erin.rivers) on Oct 5, 2015 at 1:12pm PDT   This is one of those gems that, once you discover it, you'll kick yourself for not having visited sooner. Offering some of the best pizza in Leeds, the food on offer here is so good that you'll probably need to book a table well in advance. While the pizza is to die for, the gelato is divine. A nice touch is the option to buy fresh garlic mayo to dip your crusts, and this restaurant is suitable for families, couples and groups of friends. Be warned though: if you go big on the pizza, you'll need to be on your A game in terms of appetite. When it comes to eating out in Leeds, the city centre undeniably has its charms. However, there's plenty to be said for making a trek out to the 'burbs, too. In the first in what we aim to be a series, we've highlight some of the most interesting places to grab a bite to eat within a Leeds suburb. First up, we take a look at what Yeadon and Otley have to offer: Murgatroyds   A photo posted by Jordan Long (@jordanfranklong) on Nov 17, 2012 at 12:16am PST   Landlocked Leeds may not be a place you immediately think of when you think fish and chips. The massive Murgatroyds defies expectations, offering epic portion sizes, fresh fish and seafood, crunchy batter, and delicious chips. This is a great place to grab one of Britain's favourite dishes. Just one word of warning: make sure you bring your appetite. The freshly prepared dishes represent fantastic value for money and the rustic interior makes for a really family-friendly lunch location. On a warm summer's day, there is also outside seating, so you can enjoy a veggie lasagna or a falafal wrap in the Leeds sunshine.  The Cheerful Chilli, East Chevin Road, Otley, LS21 3DD Weegmanns

Stockdales of Yorkshire bring the beef to South Parade

Located next door to San Carlo, situated inside a Grade II listed building, the newly opened Stockdales of Yorkshire has brought fine dining for meat eaters to Leeds city centre.  With a sociable bar area and seating for 100 diners (which includes a private dining area for up to 10 guests), this quintessentially British restaurant promises a superior quality of meat without a premium price tag. The menu – created in partnership with chefs Anthony Flinn and Jonathan Elvin – boasts a wide range of steak cuts, including British Wagyu Beef, and with the restaurant possessing a Josper Grill (making Stockdales and Crafthouse the only restaurants in Leeds to have one), Stockdales is certainly the place to visit for some serious beef. Leedsfoodie.co.uk   Offering a wide range of aperitifs, beers and wines (including a few nods to Yorkshire with the inclusion of rhubarb in several of the cocktails), along with some tasty, slightly unusual bar snacks, this makes Stockdales an ideal place to grab a pre-dinner drink. Leedsfoodie.co.uk   While undoubtedly the focus in on quality steaks, the menu also caters for pescatarians and vegetarian diners, with the main course veggie option being a pumpkin risotto (£12). Fish options include a pan fried sea bass (£16.50) and a smoked haddock with a mussels and potato chowder (£14). For steak fans, the cheapest option starts at £19.50 but the ultimate menu pick has the British Wagyu Beef, which comes with charred gem lettuce, crispy bacon, crout

Five baby friendly venues for new parents in Leeds

For new parents, the prospect of getting out and about with baby can be a nerve-wracking experience, even if you want to do something normal like go for a coffee.  What once used to be straightforward and easy will now have you worrying about all manner of things: Will the buggy fit through the door and get in everyone's way? Will I get death stares from other diners when baby kicks off? Are there actually places in Leeds that are both baby friendly and genuinely appealing for adults? While we can't help you with the first two, we can certainly offer a few suggestions as to where to take your little one and make the most of the many baby friendly venues in Leeds: For coffee and a film: Hyde Park Picturehouse  <img id="6a85683b-08a8-c4dd-0757-278b01bf04f3" class="photo lazy inline" src="http://media.timeout.com/images/102868214/image.jpg" alt="Hyde Park Picturehouse Leeds Headingley" align="middle" data-caption="" data-credit="Flickr: Tim Green" data-width-class="100" data-mce-src="http://media.timeout.com/images/102868214/image.jpg" image_id="102868214"> Flickr: Tim Green   Whether you're on your own, want somewhere different where you can meet up with your antenatal group, or are simply a fan of cinema, Wednesday mornings at the Hyde Park Picturehouse is the regular BYOB (bring your own baby) event, which makes for a great trip out for parents with babies under one year old. Five great value eateries for students in Leeds

For those of you about to start at one of our three wonderful universities in Leeds, we envy you. Three (or more) years of drinking, socialising and eating out awaits you. Oh, and the occasional bit of studying, of course...
