Sydney Town Hall celebrates 140 years

Sydney Town Hall celebrates 140 years

Happy Birthday Sydney Town Hall! From performances from Lady Gaga and KISS to political rallies and dubutante balls, Sydney Town Hall has a colourful history. This weekend, it's celebrating 140 years by opening its doors to the public for an event appropriately titled 'We Love Sydney Town Hall'. On Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26, you can explore the venue and spot a few cardboard cut-outs of HRH Queen Elizabeth, Lady Gaga, former Miss Australia Tania Verstak and members from KISS.   The free family event will include ballroom dancing lessons, dress-ups, and visitors can help create a six-metre floral carpet in Centennial Hall – a recreation of an artwork that was created to support the war effort in 1938 in which 200 women spent over 12 hours arranging fresh flowers. Participants can also clad themselves in a mayoral robe and sit in the mayor's chair. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the event was all about celebrating the social significance of the building. She said, “Sydney Town Hall is one of Australia’s great sandstone buildings, and earlier this year we completed an extensive $40 million, four-year refurbishment, restoring this historic building to its former glory.”  For more details of the event, go to What's on Sydney.  Find more things to do this weekend.
