The 10 most underrated destinations in India

The 10 most underrated destinations in India

India is amazing, but as the world’s most populous country (and not to mention one of Asia’s most popular travel destinations), it can be hard to find a place to go for some proper peace and quiet. Bustling cities and tourist hotspots can become overwhelming even for seasoned travellers. Luckily, there are plenty of underrated Indian destinations where it’s possible to escape the crowds. From under-the-radar spiritual centres to mist-shrouded hill stations, here are some of my favourites.  Dimple Shiv is a writer from India. At Time Out, all of our travel guides are written by local writers who know their cities inside out. The 12 best road trips in India

The 12 best road trips in India

For me, off-roading in the Himalayas has to be my favourite road trip in India. I remember tucking in a shawl in the back seat of the car at 4am, heading from Chandrataal towards Delhi in -7C temperatures. The shivering cold, missing out on sleep, and every other compromise was all worth it for the experience of road-tripping through the narrow serpentine roads that make their way through the world’s highest mountains. But that’s not the only unforgettable road trip that India has in store. From the rugged northern terrain of Ladakh to the lush hills of Kerala in the south, this vast country has something for every kind of traveller. Trust me: there is no better way to explore this land of vibrant culture, delicious food, rich culture and welcoming people than by hitting the road. Fasten your seat belts and start planning for these unmissable Indian road trips. RECOMMENDED: 🗺 The best places to visit in India🛎️ The best hotels in India

You’ll soon be able to book a bunk bed on an economy flight

You’ll soon be able to book a bunk bed on an economy flight

Most of us have struggled to sleep, let alone sit comfortably, in economy class while lusting over the leg space and luxury of business class. But, thanks to Air New Zealand, business class envy might be a thing of the past. The airline is set to introduce bunk beds on flights that can be accessed by economy and premium economy passengers. Starting in September 2024, on aircrafts heading out on long-haul journeys, these bunk beds will give you a sweet sleep time of four hours, accompanied by complimentary eye masks and earplugs.  Those who want to have some shut-eye can book the pods at an additional cost to their flight ticket. While the beds are 35,000 feet above sea level, the ‘Skynests’ won’t be very different in feel and appearance from the semi-private passenger train berths on sleeper trains.  What’s the catch? Well, each flight will only have six sleeping pods, so you might have tough competition booking yourself a snooze. And while the official price hasn’t been announced yet, it’s unlikely to be cheap. Regardless, this is definitely a win for those who fly economy. Imagine being able to stretch out for a couple of hours on a 24-hour flight from New Zealand to Europe? Gamechanger. You’ll still need some extra cash to book some shut-eye, but it does feel like things are getting more egalitarian in the skies.  Did you read this new ranking of the world's busiest airports?  Stay in the loop: sign up to our free Time Out Travel newsletter for the latest travel news

Revealed: the world’s wealthiest cities in 2023

In news that has entirely not read the room, the world’s wealthiest cities – based on the fastest-growing millionaire populations – have been named for 2023. That’s right: there are still millionaires out there, even in the cost-of-living crisis, and they’re multiplying.  Henley & Partners compiled the list by tracking the spending habits of over 150,000 high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) from 97 cities across the world. The firm primarily focused on wealthy individuals with the work titles Founder, Chairperson, CEO, and Director.  Top of the rich list this year is New York City, which boasts a whopping 58 billionaires. The runner-up city is Japan’s capital Tokyo, which is home 290,300 HNWIs. USA’s The Bay Area is third on the list, probably thanks to the well-paid tech workers in Silicon Valley. This year, only one European city made it in the top ten wealthiest cities: London (no surprises there). Most of the list is dominated by cities in the US and China.  Here are the top 10 wealthiest cities in the world according to Henley & Partners: New York City, USA Tokyo, Japan The Bay Area, USA London, UK Singapore Los Angeles, USA Hong Kong Beijing, China Shanghai, China Sydney, Australia If you want to get annoyed at all the extreme wealth in the world, check out the complete list here. These are the destinations you’re most likely to get sick, apparently

Imagine saving up for your dream holiday, planning for months, booking the time off work, and then eating something dodgy and falling sick as soon as you land?  It’s a nightmare scenario – and probably one we’ve all found ourselves in at one point. But you might be able to plan for it in future, thanks to the Forbes Advisor Travel Bug Index, which lists 25 global destinations where travellers are most likely to get sick. To come up with the list, Forbes reviewed more than 2.4 million Tripadvisor reviews containing terms such as ‘salmonella’, ‘gastroenteritis’ ‘e-coli’, and ‘food poisoning’. They then scored the destinations under each category to create a Travel Bug Index Score on a scale of 0-100. The research showed that Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic has the highest possibility of troubling you with the travel bug with a 90.4 Travel Bug Index Score, followed by Sharm El Sheik in Egypt at 83.5. The other destination that made it to the top three is the island of Sal in Cape Verde, with a 70.6 index score. These are the top 10 travel bug hotspots across the world: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic  Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt  Sal, Cape Verde  Playa del Carmen, Mexico Cabo San Lucas, Mexico Bali, Indonesia Hurghada, Egypt Tulum, Mexico Boa Vista, Cape Verde Cancun, Mexico The company followed the same methodology to rank European destinations where you are most likely to catch the travel bug.  These are the top 10 travel bug hotspots across Europe: Benidorm, Spain London,

The world’s best hotels have been announced for 2023

Are you the type of traveller who considers the hotel a destination in itself? Well, we’ve got the perfect list for you. Travel magazine Travel + Leisure has recently released its annual list of the best new hotels in the world – and it’s just as cushy and luxurious as you’d expect. The magazine’s selection this year was split into eight different categories, from beach getaways to affordable luxury. There’s everything from mountaintop retreats to five-star beach stays – so as long as you have some cash to splash, your tastes will be catered for.  In the city hotels category, luxury chain Four Seasons’ Nashville branch got a nod for its music-themed decor, while New York’s Nine Orchard is likened to ‘staying in a chic friend's apartment’. Other hotels in the category include the W in Rome, London’s The Twenty Two, and Casa Polanco in Mexico City. When it comes to beach getaways, you’ll find (yet another) Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, on Mexico’s rugged coastline. Brand-new openings include Cosme in Greece and Fasano Trancoso in Brazil, while Bermuda’s Cambridge Beaches – which boasts four private beaches – recently underwent a full renovation.  The adventure resorts category includes Italy’s OasyHotel – simple wooden lodges perched on a Tuscan hilltop – alongside Mexico’s Naviva, Duke’s Camp in Botswana, and Lolebezi in Zambia. And from Berlin’s Château Royal to Short Stories Hotel in Los Angeles and Miami’s Life House, there are also plenty of options in the affordable lux

These are officially the world’s best places to watch the sunset

Whether you're backpacking across Arizona or on a budget trip to India, one of the best parts of seeing the world is getting to witness the sunset in some of the globe’s bucket list destinations.  If you’re someone who factors sunset-watching into every trip itinerary, you’ll be excited to learn that travel agency Planet Cruise has revealed the top 15 places to watch the sunset across the globe, based on Tripadvisor reviews. To come up with the list, the company gathered several five-star reviews containing the word ‘sunset’ and calculated the percentage of these reviews as compared to the number of total reviews. They then calculated the average star rating for each location containing ‘sunset’ and ranked them accordingly. The findings showed, somewhat unsurprisingly, that Arizona’s Grand Canyon is the world’s best destination to experience a breathtaking sunset with a 4.916-star rating.  It was followed by the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in India with a 4.864-star rating. The marble mausoleum is also one of the seven wonders of the world.  The largest religious structure in the world, Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, took the third position with a 4.795-star rating.  Here are the destinations Planet Cruise named as the world’s best sunset spots: The Grand Canyon (USA) The Taj Mahal (India) Angkor Wat (Cambodia) Eiffel Tower (France) London Eye (UK) Mallory Square (USA) Tanah Lot Temple (Indonesia) Jimbaran Bay, Bali (Indonesia) Eagle Beach (Aruba) Haleakala National Park

Italy is now fining tourists for ‘lingering’ in popular beauty spots

If you’re planning to fill up your Insta feed on a summer trip to Italy, you might be disappointed by the latest news coming from Portofino. The popular coastal fishing village, known for its colourful houses overlooking the sea, has introduced a whopping fine of €275 (£242, $300) for anyone hanging around too long in certain areas prone to congestion. Tourists looking for that perfect shot tend to flock to two major photogenic hotspots – you only need to browse photos tagged in Portofino on Instagram to see what we mean – but now, those spots have been termed red zones, or no-waiting zones.   Mayor of Portofino Matteo Viacava claimed that the ‘anarchic chaos’ created by tourists stopping to take pictures has resulted in massive traffic jams and blocked streets.   The measures came into effect over the Easter weekend, when Portofino was packed with tourists. It will now be a permanent rule as the town gears up for a busy summer season, and will be enforced from morning to 6pm every day until October 15.   The new rule is the latest in a spate of restrictions enforced by tourist destinations across the world to combat the impact of overtourism. If you’re still planning a summer trip and want to avoid getting stuck in selfie traffic, consider visiting one of the world’s many underrated destinations. Portofino still calling? Don’t expect to be able to get that perfect pic for the gram – unless you’ve got some cash to spare. Did you read about how Amsterdam is cracking down on r
