Fun Facts about the Kruger National Park

Fun Facts about the Kruger National Park

As someone fortunate enough to have visited the Kruger National Park many times since childhood, I may be biased in saying this. Still, there are few other places around the world that come close to the pure relaxation and tranquillity this natural wonderland has to offer. From the flowing waters of the many rivers to the changing landscapes which bring about so much natural beauty, the Kruger is that one place where you can take a step back from the troubles of life and simply let go. To celebrate all the wild and wonderful aspects of the Kruger, below are some facts about the world-famous game reserve that will only fuel your desire to pack your bags and head off on the trip of a lifetime. The best road trip pitstops in South Africa

The best road trip pitstops in South Africa

"It's not about the destination, but the journey..." Or something like that. Try telling that to screaming kids who, for the 303rd time in an hour, believe asking, "Are we there yet?" is going to make the car instantly teleport to the destination.  Ok, clearly you can see this is coming from a place of trauma, but I digress. We do love a road trip in South Africa. Apart from the natural beauty that is on offer while driving for holiday, work or family reasons, there is something therapeutic about being on the open road, away from the craziness of the big city and daily life. Part of that therapeutic journey involves stopping off on the side of the road to discover something cool, experience something different or chow down on something delicious. All major routes in South Africa have these little spots for you to stretch those legs and refuel yourself (and your vehicle). From standard petrol stations with a good old Wimpy to a pitstop that has wild animals roaming around (yes, that place exists in Mpumalanga), I've put together a list for your next road trip along the open roads of stunning Mzansi, so check it out below. Time Out Tip: This one goes without saying, but please never drink and drive. Ever. We see far too many road fatalities in South Africa as a result of people having a few drinks and hitting the road. We're all for having a good time, it's what we promote at Time Out South Africa, but never should you ever drink and drive. Have fun responsibly, always. Time O
The best places to see lions in the wild in South Africa

The best places to see lions in the wild in South Africa

Our beautiful South Africa is renown for its safaris (trips to the bush for those more au fait), with options available from simply pitching a tent to 5-star luxury lodges. The Big 5 - lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo - is the major drawcard when out in the bush (I've got a soft spot for hyenas and pangolins), but of those five, the lion is and always will be the ultimate sighting for many (that's likely down to Simba). It's bucket-list stuff to see a lion in the wild, and if you are lucky enough, you may even see them hunting or with cubs... although they do tend to be rather lazy during daylight hours. Question now is, where can you actually go to see them in the flesh in South Africa? I've produced a list for you, but there is one important factor to remember whenever you go into the natural habitat of a wild animal - there are no guarantees that you will actually see them. That's part of the beauty of a safari - there could be something hiding behind every corner and every bush... there also might not be, so actually finding the animals you are looking for makes it all the more sweeter if/when you do. Time Out Tip: Lions are most active between dusk and dawn, so if you are on a self-drive safari, head out of camp as soon as the gates open and again in the late afternoon ahead of gate closing time. If you are staying where guided drives are available, a sunset or night drive will amplify your chances of seeing these big cats. Time Out South Africa Recommends: 🦁

The 8 music acts we want to see live in Cape Town in 2026

The 8 music acts we want to see live in Cape Town in 2026

A little birdy has been tweeting loudly to us at Time Out Cape Town... there's a lot on the horizon for live music in the next year or two, not least the big rumours around BTS and Coldplay's announcement while on stage. We've also got the Calabash news from Big Concerts, with the mini-festival returning in February 2026. So, while we know there will be live stadium shows coming, who exactly will be taking to the stage in Cape Town? Well, we have a wishlist below, so we hope the organisers are listening... In the meantime, you can keep abreast of all the events taking place in Cape Town in our comprehensive guide. A Slice of the Cape: Worcester Golf Club

Welcome to A Slice of the Cape, Time Out Cape Town's series on the golf courses located within and around the Mother City. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or just a player who enjoys a day out on the fairways (if you can hit them), this series aims to showcase the best options available for a drive, chip, putt and well-deserved cold one. Located 110km from Cape Town in the foothills of the Brandwacht Mountains, Worcester Golf Club is home to an 18-hole Gary Player-designed course. I have played many of Cape Town's local courses, but I have never ventured this far out for a round. While I knew the experience would be challenging, given the area's vegetation and climate, I did not expect to be completely won over by a wonderful course surrounded by such rugged natural beauty.READ: The best golf courses in Cape Town Sign up to Time Out's free newsletter for expert recommendations on new things to do, see, eat and drink in the Mother City. The 7 music acts we want to see live in Johannesburg in 2026

Following the massive success of Travis Scott at FNB Stadium, we've got even more of an appetite for stadium shows in Johannesburg. While nothing major for 2026 has been announced yet* (what's happening with Calabash, Big Concerts?), there are rumours floating around of who could be coming in the near future. BTS have been teased, while Coldplay look set to return - if their lead singer Chris Martin was telling the truth. So, to get you excited (and a chance for us to speak good things into existence), here's our wishlist for 2026 and beyond. We've left BTS and Coldplay out because we've already freaked out about that possibility and our Social Media Manager has created a vision board for the South Korean stars... *We know that some music acts have already been announced (Bryan Adams, anyone?), but we want stadium shows, too! The best wagyu burgers in Cape Town

The best wagyu burgers in Cape Town

Here at Time Out Cape Town, we sure do love a burger. It’s why our expert guide to the Best burgers in Cape Town is at 25 of the city’s best burger joints… and counting! But what’s better than a burger? A Wagyu burger! All the things we love about a great patty are dialled up to 11 when you use Wagyu mince.   What is Wagyu? Wagyu refers to a group of Japanese-origin cattle breeds (Kobe is the poster child) prized for their intense fat marbling. As the meat cooks, the fat melts, basting it from the inside out. It’s heaven in a steak, but in burger form, that means more flavour, more tenderness and more crispy caramelisation on the edges. But using Wagyu isn’t a free pass to going OTT. It’s about balance and technique. The best spots choose the right grind and fat ratio, season just right, and bring toppings that turn up the volume further. Bring me the piquant pickles, proper cheese and a bun that has the chops to hold it all together, and we can talk. Sound good? We think so, which is why we’ve done the hard yards to eat our way across the city to bring you the Cape Town kitchens doing Wagyu burgers the right way. Bring an appetite. Grab extra napkins. Golden Valley Hotel, Worcester

Golden Valley Hotel, Worcester

3 out of 5 stars
For many, Worcester is often viewed as a pit stop destination and merely a chance to stretch the legs on the way to and from Cape Town along the N1 route to Johannesburg. However, a lot of time and effort has been put into making the area a tourist destination in its own right - and the Golden Valley Hotel is one such attraction working to change the minds of both Capetonians and tourists alike when it comes to holidays and weekend breaks. Located in the Breede Valley, the hotel is surrounded by natural beauty, from the rugged yet pretty Klein Karoo vegetation to the Hex River Mountains to the north and the Du Toitskloof and Slanghoek Mountain ranges to the west. It’s the perfect base from which to explore this beautiful part of South Africa, which is home to a selection of the most delicious wines our Cape region has to offer and some of the best golf I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Why stay at Golden Valley Hotel? There is a very chilled vibe about Golden Valley Hotel, which makes it a great spot to simply take a load off for the weekend or a longer stay. The Cape-Dutch-styled hotel has recently undergone a revamp and now features elegant Victorian charm across its  97 rooms and common areas. Fun fact: Following the closure of Cape Town's Table Bay Hotel for their own revamp, Sun International gifted a number of the hotel's high-end furnishings and decorative fittings to Golden Valley to be incorporated into the Worcester attraction's new look and feel. The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel

The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel

4 out of 5 stars
I've lived the majority of my life in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, so I am a little annoyed that it took me nearly four decades to visit this wonderful hotel, located pretty much on my doorstep in Constantia. If you love comfort, historical significance, great service, and delicious food, then The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel is that spot. Throw into the mix a stunning nine acres of gardens to explore and a whole host of activities to partake in - both at the hotel and in the surrounding area, and you have an adventure awaiting you which is sure to satisfy your need to relax and be pampered. I know that is how I felt when I sadly had to check out... Why stay at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel? I'm not going to go into a full history lesson on the hotel and its property; just know that its roots date all the way back to 1693 and it's definitely a big plus as to why you should book your stay. I'd also highly recommend asking a member of staff to take you around the property, as the nuggets of information will make your stay all the more richer - as it did for me. Over and above that, there is a warmth to the hotel. It feels like you are at home. I know that sometimes sounds a bit cheesy, but it's true. From the lovely staff to the homely feel of the rooms - not to mention its prime location - it is well worth checking out. What are the rooms like at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel? The hotel is home to 51 guest rooms, suites, and villas. I was afforded the opportunity to stay in one of t

6 Fun Facts about South Africa's Garden Route

South Africa is home to some of the world's most beautiful regions - and the Garden Route is one of them. This lush, green, scenic stretch along the southeastern coast of the country is not only special to look at, but is home to a plethora of wildlife, some exciting activities, and sea-side holiday towns which will give you the chance to truly escape the craziness of life. Here are 6 fun facts you need to know about the Garden Route: 1 - 300km of scenic delight The Garden Route officially starts at Mossel Bay in the Western Cape (some say it's actually Swellendam) and ends at the Eastern Cape's Tsitsikamma forests. The best time of year to visit the region is between September and April, with marine life sightings - whales and their friends - best around September/October. The 5 South African songs you need to listen to

The 5 South African songs you need to listen to

South Africa's diversity has given birth to a plethora of musical sounds over the years. From traditional music all the way to new waves such as amapiano, Mzansi knows how to do music well and caters for all tastes. But what are the quintessential South African songs you need to add to your playlist, as both locals and visitors coming to sample the best of what the country has to offer? Below are five songs that need to form the starting point of your adventure into the sounds of South Africa. Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Shosholoza For many, 'Shosholoza' was the soundtrack to the 1995 Rugby World Cup, uniting a nation at a time when it needed it the most. However, the origins of the song are actually found in Zimbabwe, where it was sung by Ndebele miners travelling by train to South Africa. The late Nelson Mandela admitted in his book, 'The Long Walk To Freedom', that he used to sing the song while imprisoned on Robben Island as it "made the work lighter".  What was once a traditional miner's song has found global fame over the years, with international artists such as Peter Gabriel and Helmut Lotti performing their own versions. However, the most famous version is that of Grammy winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who, over the years, have shown the world that traditional songs have their place in mainstream popular culture. Johnny Clegg & Savuka - The Crossing (Osiyeza) It would be wrong to have a list of South African classic

Asoka: A place of mystery, Asian fusion, and an olive tree

From the moment you set foot inside Asoka from what is usually a very busy Kloof Street, the hustle and bustle of Cape Town is left firmly at the door. Built around an ancient olive tree (one of the oldest in Cape Town), Asoka effortlessly creates a mysterious charm that not only affords you the chance to relax, but to indulge your senses - from the carefully-curated menu and refined drinks options to the soft lighting and ambience created by live music. Whether you are visiting for a romantic dinner with that someone special, a girls' night out, after work dinner with colleagues or a proper session with your mates, Asoka is the type of place where you sit down for a meal, but seamlessly stay long into the night. Laura McCullagh What to eat at Asoka "Asoka’s menu has been designed in keeping with the current trend of 'sharing'. Portions are small enough, yet still generous in flavour for one to enjoy a variety of items instead of the usual starter, main, dessert," says Asoka Head Chef Nicholas Olifant. "Our food is rooted deeply in 'worldly' inspiration, but leans more in the use of Asian seasonings. While we do make use of Maldon, EVOO, and the like, we also choose different soys, miso, mirin, teriyaki, gochujang, chilli oils, curry spices, tikka, and fish sauce." Those flavour inspirations shine through in standout dishes such as the Spicy Gochujang Korean Fried Chicken, Seared Teriyaki Beef Fillet (Chef Nicholas' pick for must-try - "Bright, clean, simple, decadent," he

Is this South Africa's best beer?

Is this South Africa's best beer?

Beer, glorious beer. Picture this: It's a hot day in Cape Town, you're done with your responsibilities for the day and now it's time to chill with a cold one in hand. Is there anything better in life? Well, maybe, but for the sake of this article we will say there isn't, especially when you consider just how highly beer ranks in the South African context when the fire is lit and the braai commences. Cape Town beer's global recognition 'Beer guy and marathon runner' on Instagram, Alan (@beerwithalan), loves his beer. He loves it so much that he's tried roughly 3,200 brews from all around the world. Lucky guy, but you may need a Babalas Rescue or two... Clearly, Alan knows a good beer when he tastes one, so it was great to see that he has shown some love for a South African beer brewed right here in Cape Town. Well, used to be brewed... So, what is the beer in question? It's Devil's Peak Beer Company's Capenhagen, which was created in collaboration with Danish brewers Mikkeller seven years ago. The beer was brewed using local Southern Passion and African Queen hops for a very limited period. How Alan managed to get his hands on a can of this New England IPA in 2025, I don't know, but we'll take the Cape Town shoutout from him, even if he called our city, "South Africa's Capital City" (yes, it's one of three, but he said it like it's the only one). You can watch Alan's full feature on the beer here, with the original Mikkeller Facebook post below. Devil's Pea
