Multi-millionaire sot Arthur (Moore) and an ex-shopgirl Linda (Minnelli), now married five years, are sans child but happy. He's still rolling around town regaling the pofaced populace with a stale repertoire of pranks, drinking champers in the bath, laughing at his own jokes. Linda is still putting up with the shit. So far, so formula. Arthur's vindictive would-be father-in-law (Elliot) engineers a takeover coup, leaving Arthur penniless. Linda waitresses, but Arthur can't tie his own shoelaces, so he's soon hitting rock bottom. That blows the adoption plans and sets up the emotional crisis. Worst of all, Gielgud's vitriolic British butler Hobson is dead; his replacement (Benedict) is no match, so Hobson has to be resurrected, via Arthur's hallucinations, to provide homilies and set Arthur back on the path to a happy ending. As funny as a cerebral haemorrhage.
