Midtown and Chelsea

  • Beer bars
  • Chelsea
Kick things off at this new addition to the area’s growing brew-nerd scene. Eighteen taps comprise the sudsy spectrum, from light and approachable (Stillwater Artisanal Mono pilsner) to dark and esoteric (Alvinne Omega wild ale by Belgium’s Picobrouwerij Alvinne—say that three times fast).

  • Chelsea
Named for the Portuguese word for “hops,” George Mendes’s blaringly loud beer hall boasts a crisp Mary pilsner from Hill Farmstead and a HopHands pale ale from Tired Hands Brewing Company, among others. Soak up the suds with authentic eats like the piri-piri chicken.
  • Sports Bars
  • Midtown East
This lively watering hole was one of the first craft- brew destinations in midtown and now boasts more than 150 bottles and pours from Left Hand Brewing Company, Hill Farmstead and other sought-after breweries.

Famous for its cracker-thin Roman-style pizzas, Marta also has a killer brew program for hops-heads. With options like Ommegang Witte and Maine Beer Company’s A Tiny Beautiful Something, beer director Corey Gargiulo has put together a list to entice newbies and seasoned drinkers alike.

Astoria and Long Island City, Queens

  • Breweries
  • Astoria
SingleCut was the first of the Queens’ new-wave breweries to open way back in 2012. The tasting room offers a dozen drafts for on- or off-premise consumption, as well as grub (go for the pretzels and bratwurst) and free tours on weekends.

Continue to pad your stomach at this gourmet grocery—part cheese-and-butcher shop, part brew-geek haven—which offers hundreds of ales and lagers by the bottle as well as 10 drafts, so you can drink on the grounds or fill up a growler to go. (Reminder: Drinking on the street is still, you know, illegal.)

At this tiny dimly lit ’hood hangout, choose from a dozen drafts, including those from near (Frau Blücher rauchbier by Long Island’s Barrier Brewing Co.) and far (Saison du Tracteur by Quebec’s Le Trou du Diable).

Sure, the lines to nab a picnic table at the OG beer garden can be hella long. But trust us: Clinking big-ass drafts of Czechvar and Spaten in the Czech mainstay’s expansive, buzzing back area might be the best way to spend a sunny day in the borough.

Gowanus and Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn

  • Beer bars
  • Carroll Gardens
Kick off your trek around the Gowanus Canal at this German-influenced brewhouse, which specializes in slow-fermented ales and lagers like Echo Maker dark rye ale and Sunshine Daydream pilsner.

Duck into this industrial, delightfully grungy taproom to sample Other Half’s West Coast–style hop bombs. Thirsting for something rare? Queue up early every other Saturday for special can and bottle releases like All Green Everything triple IPA, Doug Cascadian Dark Ale and In Absentia Luci stout.
  • Breweries
  • Gowanus
Home brewer turned pro Jason Sahler pours 10 of his draft beers at this cozy in-house tasting room. Saddle up to the custom-made bar and knock back Of Earth & Bine, a nutty 6.1 percent ABV brown ale, or Fat Man, Little Stout, a roasty dry number.

Polish off your tour at this stylish brewpub, which hosts DJ nights, comedy shows and other events that should convince you to stick around for another round. Choose a house beer—Threes forte is saisons and farmhouse ales, but the IPAs are also knockouts—or select one of the nine guest taps like Connecticut-based Kent Falls Brewing Company’s Juicemaker.
