Among NYC art museums, none is grander than the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Occupying 11.5 acres next to Central Park, the Met, one of Gotham’s iconic attractions, is the custodian of treasures and artworks spanning more than 5,000 years of history. Among its many marvels is the Temple Of Dendur, located in the Egyptian Wing, and the 19th-century Neo-Classical bank facade that serves as the entrance to the galleries of the American Wing. But the Met isn’t just about the past: It features modern and contemporary art, too, including a new outdoor art project commissioned each year for the rooftop garden. The museum even opened a branch dedicated to contemporary art in 2016, at the former Madison Avenue home of the Whitney Museum of American Art; called the Met Breuer, it’s named for Marcel Breuer, the architect who designed the building in 1966. There’s a lot to see at both locations, so find out what’s in store with our list of current and upcoming shows at the Met and Met Breuer.
