Outer Banks fans will not need reminding that the new season – or the first part of it, at least – has landed on Netflix. For its huge and passionate fanbase, the romance-and-adventure series is already a shoo-in on any list of the best TV shows of 2024. But after a trip to the Caribbean and the Amazon in season 3, the Pogues are heading home for number 4. But for how long? Take a trip behind the show’s newest locations.
What happens in the new season?
The action-packed third season played out like Lost meets Raiders of the Lost Ark, with shipwrecks, kidnaps, treasures and a trip to the jungles of South America. Tears were shed, laughs were had, attractive people made out, and some major characters were dispatched (RIP Ward and Big John). What more could you want from a season of Netflix’s most popular slice of young adult escapism?
But wait! Season four is here and there’s more romance, peril and plots twists ahead. This time, it’s 18 months on and the Pogues are on the trail of another kind of treasure. Kiara (Madison Bailey) and JJ (Rudy Pankow) are now an item, and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) and Pope (Jonathan Daviss) are also updating their relationship status to ‘loved up’, with John B and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) rounding out the posse.
The gang are back to the Carolinas and setting up camp at Poguelandia 2.0, a new haven from which they run a charter tour company and bait shop. But more perils and adventures await them when the mysterious Wes Genrette (David Jensen) enticing the gang with a new treasure-hunting proposal.
Where was Outer Banks season 4 filmed?
Surprisingly, the series doesn’t actually use any real-life locations on the Outer Banks, the string of islands that the show is set in and named after, located in North Carolina, USA.
The fictional town of Kildare Island is an amalgamation of locations throughout the Carolinas, with season four being the first time that Outer Banks has used sites in North Carolina.
Here’s a rundown of some of the real-life locations seen in season four of Outer Banks:
- Scenes filmed at the local 7-Eleven store in the opening episode of season four were actually shot at Crosby’s Fish & Shrimp Company in Charleston.
- The Enduro race scenes were filmed at two different sites, with Kure Beach in North Carolina used for the beach segment, and Copperhead Ranch in Rocky Point, North Carolina used for the woodland section.
- Blackstone Manor is the stately home of Wes Genrette, with Charleston property Sandfly Bluff used for exterior shots. Interior scenes were filmed at Admiral’s House in North Charleston.
- Episode three includes a scene where JJ and Kiera jump off a pier, with Crystal Pier on Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina serving as the real-life location.
- The Rockfish Bar in episode two is the Bowens Island Restaurant, located in Charleston.
- Episode five’s scenes in the church cemetery were filmed at Charleston’s Circular Congregational Church, with interior scenes filmed at the nearby Unitarian Church.
The second part of the fourth season will see the gang venture overseas, with filming taking place in Morocco for a month in early 2024. The coastal city of Essaouira was used for the action-packed episodes.
How can I watch and when does season 4 come out?
For the first time, Outer Banks season 4 is a two-part release. You can catch the first five episodes on Netflix right now, but will have to wait until November 7 for the final five instalments.
Who is in the Outer Banks season 4 cast?
Most of the OB OGs are back for the fourth run: Chase Stokes is Pogues ringleader John B Routledge. Madison Bailey is Kiara, girlfriend to Rudy Pankow’s JJ, who is John’s headstrong bestie. Carlacia Grant plays Cleo and Jonathan Daviss in her boyfriend Pope, the Pogues’ resident brainiac.
Will there be a season 5?
There’s no word of a fifth season as yet, but as one of Netflix’s most popular shows, it would not be remotely surprising to see it get the green light. Showrunner Jonas Pate has previously outlined his plan for a four-to-five season run for the series, so watch this space.
