If your job lets you work remotely and you’re looking to pick up sticks and move abroad, these days plenty of countries are competing to take you in. The number of places offering so-called ‘digital nomad’ visas is increasing by the day, making it easier for people who can work from anywhere to literally work from anywhere – so long as there’s a decent wifi connection.
The latest country to offer a ‘digital nomad’ visa is Namibia, making it the first country on the continent of Africa to offer a visa specifically targeted at remote workers. Digital nomads can now live and work in the southwest African country for up to six months.
And believe us, there are plenty of reasons to spend half a year in Namibia. The country is totally spectacular and has a huge range of stuff to explore, from the salt pans of Etosha (one of the country’s five epic national parks) to the post-colonial seaside town of Swakopmund.
Practically speaking, the Central African time zone that Namibia uses is also handy for anyone working remotely for a European company.
To qualify for Namibia’s digital nomad scheme, you’ll need a minimum income of $2,000 (£1,780) per month, plus more if you’re bringing any dependents. You’ll also need proof of income, health insurance and the usual travel documents. The visa itself costs $62 (£55).
That makes Namibia’s digital nomad visa scheme one of the most financially accessible in the world – far more so than the likes of Costa Rica (which requires you earn at least $3,000 or £2,670 per month) or Iceland ($6,900 or £6,140).
