The club scenes in cities like Tokyo and Berlin are legendary. Loads of travellers make pilgrimages to these places to party. But what do locals think of their city’s nightlife scene?

We found out, by asking more than 20,000 city-dwellers across the globe about the places they live, and then combining those results with insight from Time Out staff and experts. That created our definitive annual ranking of cities around the world – including the best places to party.

The winner? That’s Medellín in Colombia, with 90 percent of respondents saying their city has incredible nightlife.

The South American city has it all: we’re talking loud bars, energetic clubs and secret salsa places. It’s pretty cheap, too, meaning you can have a really, really fun night out without breaking the bank.

If you’re visiting, you’ll find everything from electronic to traditional music. For travellers looking for somewhere stylish to party, the Salon Amador has great music and fun interiors. Or for somewhere seriously authentic, Son Havana has live bands and a busy dancefloor.

As for other places around the world, Mumbai and Miami also score really well. Worth bearing in mind next time you’re craving a night out that’s so big, it’s worth hopping on a plane for.

Now read our definitive list of the best cities in the world right now.
