At Time Out, we’re big advocates for braving it and heading out to see the world solo. With so many amazing destinations primed for those travelling alone, and plenty of apps and networks to ensure us women travellers feel safe, there really hasn’t been a better time.

We sure know a thing or two about it, but so does Kayak, the holiday booking platform. It has just published its list of the best destinations around the world to go solo travelling based on analysis of the average cost of a meal, a hotel, the price of flights (albeit from the US) as well as a destination’s safety and the number of cultural attractions there are.

So, where is the best place to solo travel, according to Kayak? Berlin came out on top. As well as an impressive 12.43 museums, theatres and concert halls per 100,000 people (the third highest on the list, behind Paris and Milan), the German capital has a reasonable (ish) average hotel rate of €152 and an approximate spend per meal of €28. Flights excluded, it's one of the most affordable options on the list.

And we can certainly vouch for Berlin – from the best places for brunch to the city’s top nightlife spots, our Berlin hub is packed with info if you’re headed here solo. Oh, and here’s an excellent weekend itinerary.

In second and third place it’s Vancouver and Montréal, which is partly due to their proximity to the US and significantly lower flight costs (€410 and €400 respectively). Vancouver has one of the highest average hotel ratings on the list (7.7 out of 10) and Montréal is perceived as the safest city to visit alone.
