There’s a whole load of stuff that goes into a great city – that’s why, when Time Out conducts its gargantuan survey of 18,500 locals about the places they live, we don’t just ask them about the city’s vibe, but its streets, neighbourhoods, food, nightlife and culture, too.
But what helps us get between all those brilliant events, restaurants and fun places to hang out? Transport, of course! And now, we’ve got a ranking for that too – according to thousands of locals, these are the cities with the best public transport on the planet right now.
Across 50 countries we asked people what they thought of their local bus, train, subway and tram networks, and the ranking represents those where the most people described it as ‘good’ or ‘amazing’.
Topping our list, as the very best city in the world for public transport according to its locals, is Hong Kong! Surprised? No, neither are we.
Hong Kong brags one of the planet’s most iconic skylines, and it’s got the transport offering to match. There’s the MTR (mass transit railway), which serves Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories across 10 different lines, air-conditioned buses, minibuses and even double-decker trams. No surprise then that an impressive 98 percent of locals rated the city’s transport positively!
In second place was Shanghai and in third place was Beijing, but Asian cities completely dominated our ranking, claiming nine of the 19 spots.
