Getting around a city on two feet, whether you live there or are just visiting for the weekend, is not only good for us, our health, and the wellbeing of our environment – it’s also more convenient, too.
At Time Out, we love a walkable city, and that’s why we asked 18,500 locals from hubs across the planet one simple question: how easy is it to get around your city by foot? It helped us produce a 20-strong list of the world’s most walkable places, based on which ones had the highest proportion of positive ratings, and nine of these were in Europe.

Topping the list for the continent, and claiming third place across the world was (drum roll, please!) Brighton. That’s right – though the British seaside town is hilly, 88 percent of locals described its walkability as either ‘good’ or ‘amazing’, and plenty of Brighton’s top attractions, including the Brighton Palace Pier, the North Laine and the Royal Pavilion, are all within a five-minute stroll of each other.
In second place across Europe (and fifth overall alongside Chicago) was Bilbao, a city in northern Spain where 86 percent of locals rated its walkability highly, and in third place (and joint seventh with Marrakech overall) was Edinburgh, with a walkability score of 85 percent.
