We already knew rail travel was having one hell of a renaissance, but it’s always good to look at the data behind the trends. According to booking website Rail Europe, there’s been a shift towards greener, more relaxed travel options, particularly spurred on among Gen Z and millennial travellers.
‘Trains offer a smoother experience compared to flying – you can board quickly, avoid baggage limits, and enjoy a stress-free journey,’ said CEO Björn Bender, according to euronews, ‘Routes through areas of natural beauty, like Switzerland, are attracting those seeking more than just a point A to B journey.’
So, where are the best train journeys in the world? Well, euronews has compiled a list (although we have plenty of our own lists, too). Included is the Reunification Express, a 1,700 km train route that links Hanoi in northern Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh in the south. The journey packs in a whole load of scenery along the way, from mountains to coastal towns to stunning rice paddies.
Another inclusion is the TranzAlpine, a four-hour journey that takes passengers across New Zealand’s south island, from Christchurch to Greymouth. Looking in pretty much any direction in New Zealand promises outstanding views, but this train will give you a front-row seat. Read on for the full list of the world’s most incredible train journeys.
