When you go to the beach, you want the sand to be clean and the water to be pristine. Naturally, not all beaches can be quite as perfect as you want them to be, but this new report from the Foundation of Environmental Education can help you choose the best.
Every year, it assigns Blue Flags to the English beaches deemed properly clean, and in 2022, there were 71 that received the honour. So if you want to base yourself somewhere with loads of good beaches, which region of England is your best bet?
Well, in this year’s ratings, the south-west of the country fared the best, with a whopping 32 of the entries — presumably only exacerbating the annual rush to Cornwall. The south-east comes next, with Brighton, Hove and Margate all winning awards. Then it’s 12 for the east of England (think Sheringham, Cromer and the like).
While the north east is known for its hidden beaches, only six are awarded Blue Flag status. Oh, and Whitby is the only entry to make the list from Yorkshire and the Humber.
