Sure, catching the Northern Lights is something that’s on most of our bucket lists, but meteor showers promise a pretty spectacular show as well, and capturing them might not involve donning seven layers and travelling to an icy landscape.
Tonight, August 12, is when NASA predicts the annual Perseid meteor shower (which is actually active between July 17 and August 24) will peak, meaning this evening is your best chance to witness it.
Cruise operator Fred.Olsen has analysed the light pollution, weather conditions and Tripadvisor reviews of various locations to compile a list of all the best places on the coast to catch the show – so here we go.
Claiming the top spot is Rhodes, which fared well thanks to its very low light pollution and average of just 20 percent cloud cover, making it a brilliant spot for dark, clear skies. Handy if you’re already on a sunny Greek holiday, right?
In second and third place were two destinations in Croatia, and the first of these was Hvar, specifically the harbour town of Jesla which is recognised by the International Dark Sky Association as an official stargazing spot. Korčula came in third place, thanks to its low light pollution and elevation – take a look at the rest of the list below.
These are the five best destinations to catch the Perseid meteor shower tonight
