Millions of us start our day with a cup of coffee, but not every café is created equal. There’s a lot that goes into a good coffee shop – barista skills, quality of food and coffee, ambiance, sustainability practices, customer service and consistency, to name a few – and a new ranking assesses all of that and more to create a comprehensive list of the world’s greatest spots for a good cup of joe.
The final list of the world’s 100 best coffee shops factors in a public vote, which accounts for 30 percent of the final score, plus insight from an expert panel which accounts for 70 percent. Only the coffee shops with the highest combined scores make the ranks.
Topping the list as the world’s very best coffee shop is Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters, which has its flagship store in Chippendale, Sydney. But you don’t have to go all the way there to try this stuff - the company has locations all over Australia as well as in Indonesia, Kuwait, Singapore, the Philippines, the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
In second place is Onyx Coffee LAB in the USA, and in third place it’s Gota Coffee Experts in Austria. We’ve compiled the top 20 below, which includes spots in Peru, Colombia, Belgium, South Africa and Spain – read on to see if your local spot for a caffeine fix has made the ranks.
