Across the world, pretty much every nation has their version of scrumptious toppings on bread – in France they have pitze, in Mexico they have tlayuda, in Malta they have ftira – but the most universally recognised, adored and gobbled is obviously pizza.

But with so many restaurants pulling their dough and sprinkling their toppings, it can be hard to tell where is doing justice to the classic pizza pie – that’s where 50 Top Pizza comes in. Every year, a panel conducts thorough research into the best pizzas, best pizza chefs and the best pizzerias in the world, and the results are in for 2024.

In even more of a surprise than realising you actually kinda like pineapple on pizza, it’s an American restaurant which claims the top spot – Una Pizza Napoletana in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, which has climbed from second place last year. Though this place doesn’t reside in the pizza motherland, Anthony Mangieri, the pizza maker and owner, keeps the menu here very, very simple, with only classic toppings and top-quality ingredients.

And while the US might have claimed the top spot (as well as nine others in the top 50) Italy claws it back with two restaurants sitting in joint second place – Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria in Naples and I Masanielli – Francesco Martucci in Caserta – as well as 21 other entries in the top 50, taking up almost half this list. Italy is home to the best city in the world for food, after all!
