Once you get used to travelling solo, you’ll probably wonder why you ever thought it was so daunting. Across Europe and the world, there are brilliant destinations perfect for women travelling alone, and plenty of advice on how to do it easily and safely.
But where’s good, safe, and cheap? Well, discount platform Wethrift has analysed the top 30 countries on the Women Peace and Security Index and assessed the cost and number of solo tours, the price of food, hotels and transport as well as a ‘safety walking alone at night’ score.
Topping the list as the best budget-friendly destination for women solo travellers? It’s Poland! According to the study, you’ll need an average of just €7.37 for food per day, and there’s a whopping 65 tours for solo travellers on offer.
It’s also worth noting that Poland’s capital city, Warsaw, recently made the top 10 list of best cities for women travellers. Warsaw is known for its checkerboard of architecture ranging from Gothic churches to Soviet tower blocks, and has brilliant bars, food markets, and museums. Kraków, in the words of Time Out’s contributing writer Tristan Parker, is ‘great for drinking and even better for modern art’.
Historical landmarks outside of the cities include the Auschwitz Memorial and Museum and the Wieliczka Salt Mine, which has been around since neolithic times. There are also several mountain ranges if you’re keen for some hiking – head to Rzeszów in the southeast for the Bieszczady range, Kraków in the south for the Tatras and Wrocław in the southwest for the Karkonosze mountains.
Craving a beach? Not too far from Gdańsk, Sopot is the country’s top beach resort, bragging not only Europe’s longest pier, but also a 4km-long beach and protected sand dunes. In other words, this underrated country has got pretty much everything you could need, right?
Lithuania came in second place, and Slovakia came in third, scoring 93.98 and 89.88 respectively. Below is the full list of the best budget-friendly solo women traveller destinations, so read on.
