As one of Europe’s most popular destinations for food and culture, it’s about time Barcelona got a Time Out Market.
That’s right – this summer, the city’s best chefs, restaurants and bars will come together under one roof. Pair all that with some very cool cultural experiences, and you have Barcelona’s most hotly-anticipated opening.
The market will be on Port Vell, on the upper floor of the Maremagnum shopping centre. Expect views over the sea, the city and the marina, plus fourteen kitchens, a full-service restaurant, four bars (two indoor and two outdoor), an event space, and even a podcast studio.
In exciting news, we can now reveal the first five chefs on the Time Out Market Barcelona line-up.
A Michelin restaurant with views of the Mediterranean
First up is esteemed chef Fran López, who has two Michelin stars for Xerta in Barcelona and for Villa Retiro in Tarragona. At only 25 years old, López, born in L’Aldea (Tarragona) and trained in Barcelona and Paris under the tutelage of Alain Ducasse, became the fourth-youngest chef in the world to receive a Michelin star in 2009. He’ll bring his contemporary fine dining creations to the market, with dishes full of flavours from the Ebro region.
The two hottest new chefs in Barcelona
BaLó had a big year in 2023. The restaurant, co-owned by Lena Maria Grané (from Barcelona) and Ricky Smith (from London), won big at the Time Out Barcelona Food and Drink Awards. And now the award-winning chefs will bring their modern Mediterranean cuisine to the market.
All the meat on the grill
Darvaza, one of the best meat restaurants in Barcelona, ensures a firey, haute-cuisine experience in which every dish is grilled, smoked or flamed.
Rice with a twist
Can Ros serves traditional rice dishes with a creative touch – and most importantly, with a spectacular quality-price ratio (this is where Barcelonans go when they want to eat well without spending a fortune). Most of the fish and seafood is bought daily at the Barceloneta fish market a few meters away.
Market cuisine
In addition to the fourteen kitchens, Time Out Market Barcelona will have a full-service restaurant – Casa Amàlia, which will serve up traditional yet innovative Catalan cuisine.
Sílvia Nuri, director of the market, says: ‘everything is local and indigenous. It is not just about culinary and cultural experiences, we want Time Out Market to be a meeting point for the people of Barcelona: we want to rediscover the port and turn it into a space where we can reconnect with each other and enjoy everything we love about our city.’
