It might not surprise you to learn that we’re massive fans of all things Europe – there’s just so much variety, history and atmosphere packed into this brilliant patch of the world. And it’s home to some pretty great attractions, too.

However, the attraction just named as the very best in Europe has got us all scratching our heads. That’s because TripAdvisor’s Travellers Choice Awards has just named the Eiffel Tower as Europe’s top attraction. Say what?

That’s right, the Eiffel Tower, though it has a bit of a lacklustre rep and is known to trigger so-called Paris Syndrome, has received the most outstanding reviews throughout a year-long period. The landmark received a staggering 142,770 reviews, with an average rating of 4.5 (just over 100,000 of those are ‘excellent’).

And we’re not the only ones taken aback by the tower’s popularity. Graham S, a TripAdvisor user, described old Eiffel as ‘a surprisingly worthwhile tourist attraction’, while Randy said it ‘exceeded expectations’ – maybe we’re just too judgemental.

The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam claimed second place, and Barcelona’s dazzling Basilica de la Sagrada Familia claimed third.

These are the 10 top attractions in Europe, according to TripAdvisor

  1. Eiffel Tower, Paris
  2. Anne Frank House, Amsterdam
  3. Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, Barcelona
  4. Colosseum, Rome
  5. Louvre Museum, Paris
  6. Duomo di Milano, Milan
  7. Vasa Museum, Stockholm
  8. Acropolis, Athens
  9. Musée d'Orsay, Paris
  10. Pompeii Archaeological Park, Pompeii
