The latest cliffhanging episode of Succession’s incident-packed final season takes our hardy band of nepo babies to Scandinavia. It’s here that Kendall, Shiv and Roman head with the aim of nutting out improved terms on the deal to sell Waystar Royco to Alexander Skarsgård’s Swedish tycoon, Lukas Matsson.
Of course, the wilds of Norway are the outdoorsy Matsson’s comfort zone and well outside that of the Roy kids. But the hotel used for Matsson's company get-together and those negotiations does at least have the familiar ring of high-end luxury.
IRL, the GoJo boss’s company retreat was filmed at the 24-bed Juvet Landscape Hotel in a birch forest outside the village of Valldal in the northwest of Norway.
‘When we saw images of the remarkable architecture and setting of Juvet we got really excited – like nowhere else in the world,’ Succession producer Scott Ferguson told Variety.
It’s not the first time Juvet has appeared on screen as a bolthole for billionaires. It was also used as the home of Oscar Isaac’s robotics genius in Alex Garland’s 2014 sci-fi Ex Machina.
While not exactly a budget option, the hotel is surprisingly affordable for anyone who fancies disappearing into an unspoiled wilderness for a few days and still having a state-of-the-art boutique hotel to come home to – complete with hot tub, modernist architecture and posh grub. The ‘birdhouse’ rooms start at around £350/night, including breakfast and dinner, while the most expensive ‘writers’ rooms come in at £630/night.
How to get there? You’ll need to fly into the city of Ålesun and take a 90-minute drive east. Juvet sits on a famous Norwegian scenic route between Geiranger, a Unesco World Heritage fjord, and vertiginous mountain pass of Trollstigen.
This part of the world is so spectacular even Tom Cruise swears by it: the latest Mission: Impossible features a death-defying stunt in nearby Helsetkopen.
