Unlike their male counterparts, women find themselves having to think long and hard about whether it will be safe for them to travel alone to a certain destination – even if a country is at the top of their bucket list.
To help women plan their travels, travel site WayAway has studied over 200 cities around the world to determine the top 30 safest cities for solo female travellers. They interviewed locals, investigated the latest safety reports from multiple sources, and looked at independent safety rankings before compiling their list.
Talking about the list and women's safety concerns around travel, WayAway's Head of PR and Communications, Janis Dzenis said: ‘Not only though is there a moral case for making female travellers feel safe, there’s an economic one too – destinations and travel providers who can give female travellers safety assurances will be able to increase their sales and loyalty from an audience that makes up…well half the world!’
The winner of the list was, somewhat unsurprisingly, Iceland's breathtaking capital Reykjavik. Second place went to Puerto Rico's sunny San Juan. And, the third safest city for solo female travellers was found to be Budapest.
