Museums are bloody great, aren’t they? Whether they’re a ginormous summary of a place or a niche insight into local culture, they make a solid starting point to kick off a wider adventure. But have you ever wondered which museums are the most popular of all? Well, handily cruise company Cruise Croatia has conducted a study to find out. The firm has counted up the average number of monthly searches for museums around the world, and revealed the most popular museum in (almost) every country in the world.
While the study doesn’t cover all countries – rather a few are left out, especially in Asia and Africa – it does make for interesting reading. Take Europe, for instance. Aside from the obvious ones like the Tate Modern in London (the most searched-for museum in Europe), Madrid’s Prado and Paris’s Louvre, the likes of the Abba Museum (Sweden), Lindt Museum (Switzerland) and Warsaw Uprising Museum (Poland) offer some pretty fascinating insights into local culture.
In North America, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has an average monthly search of 770,000, which makes it one of the most ‘popular’ in the world. Other top north American institutions include the Soumaya Museum (Mexico), Royal Ontario Museum (Canada) and Bob Marley Museum (Jamaica).
Sure, you’re unlikely to find many hidden gems in these maps, but they’re still pretty cool. Here’s a global map showing each country’s most searched-for museum.
