Each year, we send out the Time Out Index survey to tens of thousands of city-dwellers around the world to give us the deets on what’s happening on the ground. We then combine those responses with the expertise of our global network of editors and contributors, giving you our annual ranking of stuff like the world’s best cities, coolest streets – and coolest neighbourhoods.
This year’s ranking of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world just dropped, and here’s one area that you’ve simply got to visit. Cais do Sodré in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, ranked not just as the second-coolest neighbourhood in the world, but the coolest in all of Europe.
So why Cais do Sodré? Well, for starters the area is one of Portugal’s buzziest nightlife hubs. Over the past few years, much-loved bars and nightclubs have got back into the swing of things, from swish bars like Pensão Amor and Copenhagen to revered clubs Tokyo and Jamaica.
Then there’s Cais do Sodré’s iconic Rua Nova do Carvalho, a dazzling pink street decorated with colourful umbrellas, which forms the district’s focal point and boasts stuff like cutting-edge restaurants. And that’s all only steps away from all-day-brekkie spot Dear Breakfast, independent shops like Comida Independente, and the best dishes, drinks and culture from all over the city at our very own Time Out Market Lisbon.
Cais do Sodré aside, plenty of other European neighbourhoods made our 2022 list. Cliftonville in Margate and Cours Julien in Marseille rounded out our top ten, while Glasgow’s Shawlands, Berlin’s Neukölln, London’s Walthamstow, Barcelona’s Sants and Naples’s Riona Sanità all made the top 20.
