There’s a lot of love out there for 2001’s The Princess Diaries, what with Anne Hathaway as the princess, Julie Andrews as queen and all those feelgood fairy tale vibes. Oh, and the boy band-y soundtrack brimming with Backstreet Boys, Youngstown and Hanson. What’s not to love, or frankly, revisit endlessly on Disney+?

It’s happy days in the kingdom of Genovia, then, because according to The Hollywood Reporter’s scoop a third movie is on its way to the screen.

The Princess Diaries 3 does not yet have Hathaway officially attached to return to play the one-time San Francisco high-schooler who inherits the throne of the European kingdom of Genovia.

But the actress recently revealed that she’s ‘pulling’ for the idea. ‘If there's any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work,’ she told ET. ‘We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.’

Screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji, who worked on the Supergirl and Reacher TV series, is working on a script that will be a sequel rather than a reboot.

Based on Meg Cabot’s YA novel, the movie was a hit and was followed up with Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004 – both directed by the late Garry Marshall.
