While we’re big, big fans of city life, we know a thing or two about brilliant places to go hiking, too – just check out our comprehensive roundup of all the best places to hike in Europe

However, a little extra inspiration never hurt anyone. Recently we covered the Independent’s top picks for a long old walk across the continent. Now, it’s time for even more insight, this time from Joanne Lynn, head of European product at Riviera Travel

Now that spring has finally arrived, the company has produced a list of the five best places to go for a walking holiday in Europe, starting off with the Amalfi Coast

The region is home to some super-famous walking trails, such as Lover’s Lane in Cinque Terre and the Path of Gods from Agerola to Positano, but brags plenty of smaller, quieter trails, too. With rugged cliff faces, pretty little villages and a high chance of sun, it does sound pretty glorious.

Recommended: Europe’s most pedestrian-friendly city breaks have been ranked.

Not too far away, Florence is the second destination on the roundup, thanks to the fact it’s nestled in the lush hills of Tuscany. However, the city itself is pretty walkable, if you’re keen to soak up some culture while you’re getting the steps in.

Amsterdam and Krakow also feature on the list. Whle Amsterdam might typically be known for cycling rather than walking, both cities boast streets that are easy to navigate on foot and pedestrian-only zones.

Lastly, the stunning city of Dubrovnik in southern Croatia was spot-lit. ‘The city’s Old Town is car-free, with its cobbled streets only accessible by foot. Additionally, with the city located on the coast, travellers can witness some amazing views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding Dalmatian Islands,’ said Joanne, ‘According to TripAdvisor, there are 213 outdoor activities to indulge in, with day trips and tours being the most popular picks.’
