The reviews have been middling for Moana 2, but that has put precisely no moviegoers off piling along to see it – especially in the US, where it had a huge weekend at the box office.

The Disney animated sequel, eight years in the making and starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho, has been smashing box office records all over the shop.

As per Deadline, Moana 2 had the highest Thanksgiving weekend of all time, a record previously held by Frozen 2, and also surpassed that movie for the record opening for a Disney Animation movie.

Its worldwide takings of $386m leave it set to overhaul Moana’s total box office ($643m).

Moana 2’s huge success joins Wicked in signalling a resurgence for movie musicals.

Wicked also benefitted from a bumper Thanksgiving weekend in the US. Its global takings now stand at $359 million and counting.

The movie musical is officially back.
