Stuff like smart attire, speeches and dancing are pretty much a given at every wedding, but the location? That’s where a couple can go a little bit off-piste. And if you and your person are scratching your heads trying to think of an unusual location to really make your guests say ‘what?’, listen up.
Amsterdam is celebrating its 750th anniversary next year, and as part of the celebrations the city has decided to offer a very special gift to local couples – a completely free-of-charge wedding ceremony.
The catch? Couples will need to get married in the middle of a motorway.
Amsterdam’s A10 ring road, a vital piece of the city’s infrastructure, will be partly closed on Saturday June 21 for an anniversary festival called ’Op de Ring’. A 15km stretch of the highway will not only play host to music, sports, theatre and dance, but will also become ‘a festive wedding location with space for their guests’, according to NL Times.
The ceremonies will be provided free of charge by municipal registrars in either Dutch or English. And if there are simply too many couples opting for this one-of-a-kind wedding event, they’ll be selected at random. It’s rogue, but at least it’s original! You can register your interest here – applications close on December 1.
Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary celebrations will be hosted across the Dutch capital. There will be events, parties and exhibitions, meaning regular city life will be put on pause.
