Great things take time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all. But in this instance, we’re not talking about Rome – we’re talking about Milan. The Brera Modern, more specifically, which is a modern art gallery that has been over 50 years in the making.

When opened, it will be a sister institution to the Brera, which was established back in 1809 and is home to art by Antonio Canova, Caravaggio and Raphael. The Brera Modern was originally envisaged half a century ago as a new home for the modern artworks on display at Pinacoteca di Brera gallery.

So, why all the delays? Well, according to the Guardian, the site has been plagued with issues such as asbestos and problems with the air conditioning system – the pandemic also probably had something to do with it.

But we finally – finally – have an opening date of December 7, and it sounds like it will be quite the affair. On opening day, officials have confirmed there will be an annual gala premiere of La Scala’s opera season, and concerts are planned for Brera Modern’s garden in the summertime.

The original Pinacoteca di Brera will no longer be just one art gallery – the new opening will see the site rebranded into a full-blown multi-site arts complex. The Grande Brera, as it’s now known, includes the National Braidense Library and the Palazzo Citerrio, another modern art space also set to open on December 7.

The concept is based on the Uffizi Galleries in Florence, which include the Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens, open as one multi-site complex since 2014.

Exciting, right? If you’re heading to Milan pre-December 7, make sure you check out these fabulous attractions and buildings. Alternatively, a dazzling new gallery has just opened in this European city
