A low-cost, direct sleeper train between northern Italy and Sicily is launching this Christmas, connecting Turin with the southern Italian island just in time for the festivities.

The 18-hour Sicilia Express will take in major cities like Milan, Florence and Rome, leaving Turin mid-afternoon and arriving in Messina the following morning where the train will split in two, one half heading to Palermo and the other to Syracuse.

Travellers can expect a taste of Sicily as they cross Italy, with two dining cars serving up traditional Sicilian fare (fingers crossed for cannoli) plus masterclasses, performances and entertainment to fill the 18 hour stretch.

Best of all, the journey is super budget friendly. A standard seat – easiest on your bank balance if not your back – starts at just €29.90 one way, while a sleeper compartment will set you back 129.

The catch? The festive Sicilia Express is a one off. The service will run south on December 21 with a return journey on January 5. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (December 3).

The initiative aims to help Sicilians who have moved away from family for better work or education opportunities in the north travel home for Christmas. The journey usually comes with a hefty price tag, but the Sicilia Express offers a more affordable and sustainable option than relying on expensive flights south.

If you had your heart set on snoozing your way along the rails, theres no need to fret. You can still travel around Italy via sleeper train, on a whole host of new routes like the Milan to Lecce service, the Vienna to Rome Nightjet route and the Espresso Salento, which links Rome to Lecce, as well as the Orient Express new La Dolce Vita’s routes which launch in 2025. All aboard!
