If you, like us, are a big fan of sleeper trains and an ever bigger fan of Italy, we have some exciting news.

Multiple services by Austrian operator ÖBB will soon be blessed with brand new trains to take over certain Nightjet routes. According to train expert the Man in Seat 61, these trains will begin operating on the following routes from September 10, 2024:

They’ve already been ferrying passengers comfortably on the following routes:

  • Hamburg – Vienna, plus to Munich and Innsbruck (since December 10, 2023)
  • Bregenze and Feldkirch – Vienna (since March 5, 2024)

And these new trains are pretty snazzy. Each one has seven cars: two sleeper, three couchette, one multi-functional (containing luggage space, an accessible sleeper compartment and seats) and one seats-only car.

Booking a sleeper car? You can opt for ‘comfort’ or ‘comfort plus’ which both come with adjustable temperature control, multi-coloured mood lighting and attendant call buttons, as well as two beds, a table and chairs (the latter has even more space and a shower cubicle).

The couchette car contains 28 mini cabins and three couchette compartments which can be booked out for whole families. Solo travellers have the choice to opt for single-gender compartments. Here’s a sneak peek at these swish new trains:
