Time Out says

In the bleak pre-‘Star Wars’ 1970s sci-fi cinema was fuelled by dystopian visions, from the hippie apocalypse of ‘Idaho Transfer’ via the Messianic brutality of ‘The Omega Man’ and ‘Soylent Green’ to the doomed ‘Damnation Alley’. ‘ZPG’ is an all but forgotten example, taking place in a world where overpopulation has forced world governments to crack down entirely on procreation, with couples expected to lavish their affection on not-entirely-convincing dolls. Oliver Reed and Geraldine Chaplin play a pair who defy authority and conceive, with predictably disastrous results.
