Paul Simon’s world-conquering ‘Graceland’ album made millions for the singer/songwriter but it also gave rise to discontent among those, including members of the ANC, who saw it as exploiting the shameful situtation in South Africa. Cut to 25 years later, and we accompany Simon on his travels back to the country, post-Apartheid, for an anniversary reunion gig. Aside from the new live footage and a good deal of stuff from the archives, Joe Berlinger’s film, which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, also allows Simon and some of the album’s other protagonists to have their final say. ‘Under African Skies’ not only sounds like a very welcome summary of a fabulous musical journey, it also promises some fascinating insight into the political landscape of the time. If you loved the album, you’ll surely go. ‘Under African Skies’ is one of 14 films to screen at the inaugural Sundance London event in April 2012.
